Strengths: Very nice recorded audio and visual.
Weaknesses: Customer service is lousy. Trying to get information on how to send your product in for repairs is like pulling teeth !
Summary: Of course, I have the "LOADING" problem too. I have never got it to stop. Tried calling all the phone #'s for customer service, but they are ALL recorded messages that lead you to a DEAD END. Now, I'm trying it in writing. Waiting game now. I would difinately not purchase this one again.

Strengths: vhs/dvd in one unit. RW, RAM disk
Weaknesses: does not create picture menus, VCR+ a pain to set up.
Summary: Useless, got the "loading message" also, sent it to get it fixed, and when it came back they jammed the VHS door. Returned to JVC, they sent a mv5S, after two days. The SAME problem.

Strengths: high quality recording to DVD/ from both air and tape.good playback quailty
Weaknesses: lacks certain recording fuctions from remote/ no ZOOM/ not Compu-link compatiable
Summary: as is typical of JVC the instructions tend to be confusing and hard to follow. I use this more to play DVD's then record them. recording quality is great. set up is a little complicated and using the remote is somewhat complicated I really would have preferred to have a remote and for this unit to be compu-link compatible like most other JVC equipment. the unit has performed well. My real grip is the fact that it is impossible to edit from multiple VCR tapes to a single DVD. The DVD automatically reverts to the start of the DVD and begins recording again. This has caused me to use a second VCR recorder to go from one tape to this VCR and then to the DVD. Needlessly time consuming.

Strengths: Flexibilty of available functions
Weaknesses: Cost.
The infrared interface between the cable box and DR-MV1s is not included.
The remote control programming function is cumbersome.
Summary: This is the first DVD recorder I've owned. I considered a DVR, but this was a better fit for me. At this time, cost is pricey. Like all electronics, as other brands begin to offer similar devices, I expect the price will drop. It is fairly intuitive to use save for the remote control programming function. The picture quality of VHS tapes and DVD is very good. I have successfully used its i-link hook up to transfer Hi-8 digital video from my Sony camcorder to DVD. The back and forth dubbing function VHS/DVD is attractive, but I haven't yet used it. The infrared interface between the cable box and DR-MV1s is not included, although it is available for free by ordering via an inclosed post card. I'm awaiting its arrival to ease the programming of the DVD recording from my cable TV (Comcast) server.

While I am very impressed with the quality of the ...
Strengths: DVD quality is outstanding.
Weaknesses: Have returned the unit twice for a new one in the last two weeks because the VCR part eats tapes, holds tapes, jams, and is altogether unacceptable.
Summary: While I am very impressed with the quality of the DVD playback I did not buy this machine because I wanted a $400 DVD player. I wanted to condense the space my video collection takes up, and I cannot do that when the VCR part of the machine puts my videos in jeopardy. I have had to remove the outside of the machine twice to get tapes out. Apparently it is not just a random problem with one machine since I have now had two from two different stores that both have glitches in their VCR component, the first one eating a tape and the second jamming. I have just traded the second in for a third and if it proves to work properly I will recant. Today though, I am thoroughly displeased with the quality of the VCR part of the JVC DVD Recorder with VCR.

Strengths: Usability. Two Tuners. VCR Plus. Navigation system. Can remember the position of the last 30 DVD's used for easy recall to last viewing location. Good Manual. 8 Second rewind (both VHS&DVD).
Weaknesses: After 2 to 3 months of use a major problem occurred where the unit became unusable and just keeps flashing "LOADING" on the front of the machine. Can be unplugged for an hour or so and then it works.
Summary: 2005-02-13 17:39:38 Some very good usability features. Logical design of controls. Good remote layout. Manual is well written, even better if you download User Guide Manual from web site and then use Find commands while viewing .pdf file. Very good quality DVD's. I have had the machine for a month now and enjoy using it. Have not used the VCR too much other than dubbing, since I record to the DVD-RW's.
Above was written after one month of ownership.
I am updating this review at about 2.5 months:
Developed problems that is making the unit unusable and have returned it to place where I bought it (Sears). Luckily Sears has a 90 day no questions return policy with a full refund! (Pitch for buying at Sears !) The problem that devloped was that intermittenly, the unit flashes "LOADING" on the front of the unit and becomes unusable. You can unplug it and wait an hour or so and then plug it back in and most of the time it then works. BUT, this is a major common defect according to reviews that I have seen at other web sites (i.e.: see www.cnet.com).
Its really too bad that there is some problem with this unit that many people have experienced. I will miss using it when it worked because it had so many nice features. I hope JVC can fix whatever is this common problem that is causing "LOADING" message to flash continuously ! I can not find another combo DVD Recorder and VCR with all the great features that this machine has.

I bought this DVD/VCR recorder via the net to dub ...
Strengths: good DVD RECORD and picture when it worked
Weaknesses: completely U/S after 6 weeks: no functions whatsoever not even the clock works: sent back to JVC: estimate a moonth turnaround time
Summary: I bought this DVD/VCR recorder via the net to dub all my old Videos onto DVD and to watch timeshift stuff because I work nights: After 6 weeks I came home expecting to have recorded some telly and the machine was completely DEAD with both VCR and DVD media irretrieveably stuck in its corpse. It cost me £20 to return it to the dealer: they've sent it back to JVC and the estimated turn round time is a month: I'm now £320 out of pocket and with no way of watching timeshifted TV. I bought it on the basis that JVC gear had always been reliable for me: now I say " JVC sucks". Don't buy this product!

Strengths: As a first-time user, I find the DVD recorder easy to program and play back. DVD quality is very good when recording to DVD-RAM. Dual VCR and DVD.
Weaknesses: User manual could be more user friendly (i.e. difficult to sometimes find how to do something). Do not like the silver exterior--would have preferred black. Power up and down is slow.
Summary: I'm a novice with this device and bought it to simply record my favorite TV programs. When I filled up my first DVD-RAM, I had to call the 800 number to figure out how to write over it. Person who helped me at the 800 number was knowledgeable and provided several options and pointed out the location in the user manual. Wait time to talk to this person was very short.

Strengths: A very versatile machine and very easy to use. The only machine with dual tuners whichgives you more options and flexability.
Weaknesses: Possibly a litle slow in finalizing discs. But I do not have anything to compare it to. Otherwise none that I have found.
Summary: A very easy to use machine. IT was very easy to program for recording and has VCR PLUS which is a great option. Also very easy to dub tapes to disc. I have two of these machines. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

JVC equals Poor Quality
Strengths: Feature laden
Weaknesses: Reliability
Summary: Purchased in May of '04 the unit had to be sent back 6 months later (under warrantee) for a sub pwb assy due to electronic failure. Now, 10/06 and no longer under warrantee we've suffered another electronic failure; a few leds illuminate but the unit is otherwise dead.
Messages to JVC have been unanswered.
We cannot afford to be replacing these units every 3 years.
We will never buy a JVC product again and suggest you avoid them as well.

Strengths: ability to record to VHS and DVD, between the two, in the same deck
Weaknesses: sometimes the vhs won't release the tape, door will stop working, have to reboot
Summary: I bought this new from Best Buy with the extended warranty. I was able to copy from DVD to VHS and from VHS to DVD for home movies of the family. I also recorded from my panasonic via the firewire ieee 1394 link. I don't like it when the external device has a break in the digital tape between recording that the recorder stops and makes a chapter. It was easy to use. I like the title menus. Remote is nice. Sometimes the VHS deck door will electronically stick which requires a reboot to get the tape/door fixed.

Stay away, far away!
Strengths: When the unit works, records without menu allowing the dvd to be played in virtually any player. Time interval recording.
Weaknesses: "LOADING"-"LOADING"-"LOADING"----DEAD.
Summary: 2005-12-15 21:37:23 This model has died twice requiring it to be sent to JVC. The strange thing is that the repair order says they repeated the original repair! Also, sending it insured cost over $25.00 each time at my expense. When working, it does the job. You see, we purchased the JVC DR-MV1S a little over a year ago when the unit was fairly new to the market. No real ratings were given and we based the purchase on our positive experience with other JVC products. However, our unit has been returned to JVC's Georgia warranty repair facility on two occasions and in our opinion will likely need to go back on a regular basis. We believe that the unit apparently has an inherent defect where the word "LOADING" flashes on the unit locking out any control, via remote or otherwise, of the unit. Eventually, the unit died...twice! Now, when going to other resources (for example the user input information posted on amazon.com and others), apparently, we are not the only ones who have had this recurring problem with this particular product. It seems the majority of feedback reflects a similar negative experience. While we believe that JVC has not recalled the product per se, the telephone service agents we have had contact with quietly acknowledge the issue when calling for service. For the nearly $400 spent on the unit, plus the shipping cost (twice now) and time expended in repairing the unit, it has been, to say the least a disappointment and goes to show that the reliability of a name brand may not always apply. A solution we found was the LiteOn model that costs nearly half as much and has proven to be a more reliable, user friendly solution. We have purchased two of those units for about $180 each and have loved them.
