Strengths: Nice design. Good LCD.
Weaknesses: SonicStage is required. Pricey. Headphone is not good for running.
Summary: Maybe it is sufficient to just say that this is a typical Sony product. It is expensive compared to other brand products with the same specs. It has a nice look, but some people may find it quirky. I like its LCD, which is very bright. The only drawback I found except its price is SonicStage, which is required to transfer music. SonicStage is software exclusively used for Sony audio players. It has been found buggy. Other than that I am satisfied.

it takes some time to learn to use it
Strengths: sound quality is good; looks cool
Weaknesses: SonicStage software sucks; headset is only for certain type of ears
Summary: 2007-05-12 20:12:39 It took me almost a whole night to fix the installation of SonicStage and transferred music files into the player. At first I guess my firewall blocked something in SonicStage and an error message kept showing out as "device/media not available" and the software shut itself off automatically... Meanwhile on the player it showed "file error" and cannot play. I turned off my firewall and reinstalled the software, and formatted my player. At last it worked but it took quite a while to trasnfer a whole album to the player and you've got to be very patient.
The headset looks freak on me and does not fit my ears. but if your hands are always free and you can hold the ear plugs all the time it'll work well...
the good thing is it looks like a cigar and the buttons are good to use. and sound quality is among the best I've experienced.

Strengths: Small and Lightweight
Quick song/album change mechanism
Loud, clear sound
Battery life
Armband
Water/sweat resistant
Shake-activated Shuffle function
Plays music by pace
Large memory for flash
Weaknesses: Small screen
No ability to attach clip instead of armband
Software is cumbersome
Summary: I'm a former Motorola m500 user (4GB hard drive), and was sick of getting the product replaced because of the hard drive. I haven't found any other product like the Sony S2--its unique combination of 2GB flash drive, exercise-friendly, small size, and good sound are hard to find. Obviously if you want to store all your music or look at pictures/movies this won't do it, but its small size with convenient skip forward/back mechanism and armband are great for working out with.
The software is the only drawback. It doesn't recognize new files immediately--you have to do a "scan" for it to recognize that new music files are there--which is a bit of a pain. It's also not the fastest piece of software, especially for the simple function its supposed to serve. I don't know anything about the downloading ability because I'm only transferring music I already owned.
All in all, I'm happy with this player. I still bought the 2-yr replacement plan though!

Proprietary software holds the unit back
Strengths: Water resistant, Pedometer
Weaknesses: Durability, proprietary transfer software and music format, no belt clip
Summary:
Strengths
- Water Resistant: Having fried other units with sweat during long runs, I'm pleased by this unit's water resistance.
- Pedometer: The pedometer seems to work well too and as the unit is small enough it can be taken along in one's pocket. Great for health conscious folks to track their steps throughout the day.
- Form: The unit is light and small, folks routinely compliment its design.
Weaknesses:
- Durability/Longevity: My unit died shortly after the end of the 90 day warranty, I was walking (no sweat) at the time listening to mp3's
- Paint: The paint on the units shinny face wears off quickly. As long as you memorize the button functionality its not an issue. Fortunately, given the simplicity of the interface, that's not difficult.
- Clip: Some folks prefer arm belts, I prefer a waist clip. Only an arm belt was provided.
- Exercise Tracking: Some players come with software to track/chart/upload activity data. While some write-ups refer to this capability, I have yet to locate any such software. The unit does store 7 days of calorie/step history.
- Transfer Software: Unlike most non-iPod MP3 players, one can't use Windows Explorer to transfer music, instead one must use Sony proprietary software. This complicates the process, slows the transfer and makes it impractical to download and access music from multiple computers. Along similar lines, unlike most units, you can't group music by directory but have to create playlists or listen by album.
Proprietary Formats
This is a great product, it's unfortunate that Sony continues its tradition of forcing proprietary formats. MP3 files can not be directly transfered to this device. It's a shame that Sony spent time and money developing a format and application that detract considerably from this units usability and appeal.

Cool features, but kind of annoying to use
Strengths: Sound quality, water resistant, no buying batteries, light, great armband
Weaknesses: Exersice features are not as useful as it would seem (read below), headphones are awful, software required for transfer sucks, slow transfer
Summary: I should start out by saying that this mp3 player sounds better than ANY I have ever heard before. Sound quality is truly great with unbelievably great lows and highs. That is by far the best feature of this player and blows away the competition.
Exersice features:
All the exercise features are nice, but they are not as convenient as I thought they would be. For instance, the music pacer only switches between two playlists that are pre-made and designated as walk or run. So there are only two pace options and only if you take the time to put designate all your music into one of those two playlists. The stopwatch does not have lap timer like my previous rio forge sport, so you can't keep track of your times from one run to the next (I used to like to see if my time improved from one day to the next. It has a pedometer, calorie counter and stopwatch, but there is no one button that turns them all on simultaneously (like a treadmill display) so when I hit start, the time starts and it begins tracking my distance and calories. You have to individually turn each feature on and then off if you want to keep track of those items for a 30 min run. It does not actually report your pace to you, only your stopwatch of how long you've been running and your distance, so you can't track if you are running too slow or fast.
All in all, they are cool features that I have tried to use, but I think I will get sick of setting up every time I go running.
The Rest:
As far as ease of use for playing music and navigating through the menus, those are all great. The buttons are nice and the armband is one of the better armbands I have used. The headphones are pretty awful, made of hard plastic and don't fit me at all (I have smaller ears), but I have my own anyways so that didn't matter. The soundstage software is pretty bad, but not as bad as others suggest - it's manageable. The transfer process is much slower than it should be for USB2. After it transfers a song it has a 3 second delay of "updating" which I think has to do with formatting the songs in the proprietary manner so that the songs cannot be accessed outside Sonicstage. 3 seconds doesn't sound like a lot, but when you are transferring hundreds of songs it can take a 30 sec process and make it 20 min.
Conclusion:
I seemed to complain a lot, but that is because the features it has aren't integrated properly, but being that there might only be one or 2 other mp3 players that even have any of these features, and most of them have bad reviews as far as quality, breaking down or other random things, this mp3 player isn't so bad. I'm sure the next generations will be better, but who wants to wait a few years for that? The only real competition is the ipod nano plus nike, but that is going to cost you at least $50 more for the whole package and then you have to use apple software which is also pretty annoying. If you can get this on sale it is worth it, but not for the $150 retail price.

Strengths: Cool design, easy to use, fast battery charge
Weaknesses: A little expensive, it's a little big for sport MP3
Summary: I like this product for its design. It's a typical sony product with very stylish appearance and concise way to control. Very cool to have it when sporting. The price is a little expensive but it worth the price.
I like the fast charge but it could not last long. Still good enough when you are in a hurry. The sound effect is close to perfect.

Strengths: Shape, function
Weaknesses: battary
Summary: Although this product does not support color LCD, it still a personal style product. It provides fashion function such as pedometer and it works well. The LCD is sharp and clear and can support multiple lanuages. The shape is good and fashion considering the accessories. Recommended price is around 70USD.

SONY S2 sports MP3
Strengths: sound quality, battery life, design
Weaknesses: sonicstage software
Summary: It is a nice mp3 player to have with all the good sound quality and battery life. This player is also packed with a lot of features but the only annoying thing is that you have to go through the sonic software to get the songs which is a huge negative point. I am still trying to test if other alternative softwares are OK to use in place of sonicstage software. Read some online forums before buying this.

Strengths: Good price, large capacity, very light weight, sporty design with arm band holder, and excellent sound quality.
Weaknesses: Confusing interface, and boring music transfer software.
Summary: The price of this player is very good compared to other Sony MP3 players. The main problem with all Sony players is the SonicStage software used in transferring music to the player. It is very slow. Also, the interface is a little bit confusing. Other than that, everything is great.

Strengths: Price; sound quality
Weaknesses: Small screen
Summary: Most of the previous reviews told everything about the device, I am just adding my two cents. I do not use power/ sport options, so they are not an issue form me. Sound, album/ song navigation are good, and I like included arm clip. On software side. I did not have any issues installing and using it on Windows Vista Ultimate. Before I was using Motorola Razor with iTunes, and transfer to it took way too longer (even flash was smaller) then to Walkman (must be USB 2 against USB 1). Can not say anything durability - using it only 1.5 month, so far so good. The screen size/ or display timing is not good for long file/ album/ song names - it just turn off in the middle of scrolling, and "power options" are limited to 2 timings and off.

Summary: Great Mp3 ever! It is a classic design similar with sony CD remote. It is perfect for sports funs, so that you can enjoy the music when you are running. Of course, sony sound quality cannot be beat by any other brand. Lasst, I like the lcd very much, white word in black background, it is pretty cool.

Summary: -Cool features i.e. "shuffle shake" or sports mode, (plays different playlists based on your speed), stopwatch. -Software is kinda nice how all the navigation/downloading features are all in one program. -Unique twist navigation (that little silver band on the player) can be slid up and down on the top of the player as well as twisted left and right to navigate. Strengths: Compact size,
No need to purchase additional accessories,
FM Tuner capability,
Good battery power
Weaknesses: Very light in weight - feels like nothing is on your arm,
Requires earphones with cord
Summary: I just received this Sony MP3 player as a gift, and have been trying it out for 2 days. I am an MP3 novice, and asked for this player as I wanted something I could use while working out, with the ability to listen to my own music, and the TV broadcasts at the gym (via FM stations). Previously, I had been using an older Sony Sports Radio Walkman, which only had AM/FM radio capabilty. So far, and again its only been a few days, this MP3 has been perfect - the armband adjusts snug (just like my former Radio Walkman), the sound is clear for the FM channels I tune in and my own music files, and the battery lasts a long time. I would also add that the player is very light compared to what I have been using for years. That said, I have found myself trying to lift with it on, and have easily knocked it on some of the equipment - probably not a good idea. Lastly, the earphone cord can get in the way while running, but I am used to that already from my previous unit. Overall - I would recommend this Sony MP3, as it works for me in the gym during workouts - my primary use at this time.

Strengths: light, looks nice, nice small display, very good battery, shortest charging cycle, music sounds great (even though earphones are not very good).
Weaknesses: user interface is a little bit messy, you must read the manual to really use all the functions. But after a while you can manage well.
Summary: Very nice player, looks perfect for jogging/running with it. The software - Sonicstage - has improved a lot and now is more stable and flexible. it is not Itunes or Windows Media player, so don't try to compare different funcionality. it works fine and is very intuitive to use.
Nice gadget!
