Strengths: Excellent screen,works cool,performance,output ports
Weaknesses: weight, 2X 512 RAM that is hard and more expensive to upgrade the laptop
Summary: In this price it is a good choice for a laptop with features such as Intel® Centrino

Suitability: A general-purpose notebook, suited for general mobile computing. Includes office-grade word processing software; whether you regularly create tables of content, elaborate footnotes, or complex newsletters this software can handle it all. Make your home movies zing by using the bundled video software to edit material uploaded from a digital camcorder. If you have a wireless network at home, wirelessly browse the Internet from any room in your house with this Wi-Fi enabled notebook.

Value: In view of its very inexpensive price, this notebook has great features for the money. For example, when it comes to screen size, the average price of general-purpose products with a comparable screen size is quite a bit more -- right around $1,354. Generally, this economy-class model lacks sex appeal, but budget-minded consumers will like the low price

Strengths: Great Price, Nice Styling, Beautiful Screen, Good specs.
Weaknesses: Not "state of the art" but it suits my needs-web browsing, dvd playback, and word processing. Big size and somewhat heavy.
Summary: I was able to pick this unit up at Best Buy for $699.99. I am very pleased with the product so far. My original Sony Vaio laptop is 5 years old and still runs well. I just needed something a little faster than a Pentium 3-750mhz and wireless internet so I picked up this computer.

Strengths: Inexpensive. Nice cool looking
Weaknesses: Heavy, only two USB ports, less 3 hours battery working, DVD drive is relatively noisy
Summary: I'm generally impressed with the notebook. It's a nice-looking, well-built machine loaded with unique features and with a relatively light weight to boot for 15.4 inch. It manages to combine power and portability in a single package; it's not easy to find a machine that's both this fast and this light.

If you're looking for a powerful but inexpensive for a sony, I think this would be good choice as long as you won't be doing much tinkering. I could not find a comparable machine from any other major manufacturer at the time this review was written.

Overall, I would recommend this system to anyone who can live with the cons listed above.

My experience was marred by Sony's poor software package, its no-included-CD policy and its poor tech support quality. The notebook simply doesn't work right with a clean Windows XP installation and Sony was of no help in solving the issue. I'm disappointed that a company as big as Sony would be so bad at after-sales support. Based on this experience, I would not buy another computer from Sony if any other major manufacturer offers a comparable system. In this case, however, there weren't any similarly equipped systems.

So if you have trouble deciding, just ask yourself one question: Would you be happy with the notebook as Sony configured it? If so, this'd probably be a great little machine for you. If not, if you like having more control over your system... I would stay away for the time being and wait and see how Sony addresses the issues.

3 Star ReviewSony VAIO VGN-N130G/W Notebook
Strengths: Very attractive looking, sharp and clean. Comes with 1GB installed. Vista upgrade, Very bright and & clean display, looks better than my desktop HDTV monitor and the res is only 1280x800, card reader
Weaknesses: Only 2 USB ports. When not using the max power setting for battery when not plugged in it lasts less than hour. No VGA out so no external monitor or S video, so no hooling this up to a TV neither.
Summary: Overall for the money I would say go with something else. You always pay more for the Sony name and it shows in the design of the laptop. Don't get me wrong it works great but for money... I only paid $654 After rebate with tax so it was worth it for me, but the lowest I can find it now is $799AR + tax $950 and that is too much with all of the other options out there.

Strengths: display, price
Weaknesses: battery life, bulky
Summary: This is a great computer. The video quality is great and you won't believe how clear ant bright the screen is. It plays DVD's very well and due to it's two processors you can do other things at the same time and it won't be slow or stop responding. But battery life is not that great. I miss a PC Card slot however it has an Express card slot which is a better way to connect things to a laptop. This is heavier than other Sony laptops!

Strengths: Nice display, cool white color, inexpensive for a Sony
Weaknesses: Heavy
Summary: This notebook is probably the cheapest type you could find from Sony. The comparable specs from HP or Dell will cost about 600-700 dollar. However, I am very happy with the display, built quality, and it looks. The only weakness I have so far is that it's kinda heavy, almost 7 lb, which is not typical for Sony notebook.

Strengths: Excellent screen quality, stylish looks and of course the blazing speed. windows open parallely.
Weaknesses: A bit higher on weight and a bit lower on battery, but surely, the Strengths overshadow the Weaknesses very well.
Summary: This piece of engineering is perfectly fit for those like me who wants to use the same system to do my office work when I am working from home, play DVDs with an extraordinary screen experience and run some high-end graphic games when I want to charge up.

The widescreen suits me very well for my work where I need to have multiple windows open parallely. Also, I work on Remote Desktop very often, which requires importing display from a remote site. The overall experience I get is highly pleasant and much better than the earlier Toshiba I used to have.

Some people say that the battery charger is heavy. It's definitely not larger than 95% of the laptop chargers I have seen. And on the battery life, yes it may be a bit lower than some counterparts but this is very much acceptable with the kind of screen quality you get.

Bottomline: A MUST BUY.

Strengths: Display, White Color that gives it a real Sleek look, Price... Getting Sony for this Price is amazing..
Weaknesses: None...
Summary: Its a great notebook.Loads of memory and a great speed...And the icing is the sleek look and SONY display... All other brands like dell, hp etc with 80 GB harddisk and 1 GB RAM have prices around 1500... This is the only Sony brand that is priced between 900 and 1000... And if you get a good deal on this one then you are even more lucky.. go for it.. Its a real cool piece...

Strengths: Very bright & vibrant LCD, good specs for the money, decent build quality, front-mounted SD & MS card readers
Weaknesses: No S-video out on a "Media Center" laptop, LCD resolution only 1280x800, lots of worthless software and ads pre-installed, battery life so-so
Summary: The VGN-N130G/W is a fairly large but not overly heavy laptop. The white top with engraved VAIO logo looks nice, although the keyboard seems a bit cheap. As with most Sony laptops, the glossy screen is very nice looking with great brightness & contrast and vibrant colors, although I'd prefer higher resolution than the max 1280x800. I'm surprised at the lack of S-video out on a Media Center laptop - I'll have to buy an adapter to output from the VGA port. I would also like to have DVI, but VGA-only is common in laptops at this price.

Seems quite fast, but of course so do all computers right out of the box. Haven't conducted any benchmarks, but the specs look great.

Don't expect too much out of the battery. Battery life isn't terrible, but nothing impressive either. Again, I didn't conduct any controlled tests, but you won't get 4 hours out of it unless perhaps you turned the screen brightness way down.

Build quality is decent, but nowhere near a Powerbook/MacBook Pro, for example. Heat management seems good, and it is quiet. A minor annoyance: There is no screen latch and the hinge is stiff, so if you try to open the screen just by pulling on the lid, the whole laptops comes up off the table. You need to use another hand to hold down the base.

You'll have to spend at least 30 min. to clean out all the crapware and ads that come pre-installed, such as AOL, game trials, and trailers for upcoming Sony movies.

Other than the somewhat short battery life and lack of S-video out, overall it's a good-looking laptop with good specs at a good price.

I bought it at CompUSA for $1000-$200 MIR+IL tax=$887.

Strengths: Fast, Slylish, Great Quality, Affordable and it's a SONY VAIO
Weaknesses: battery life is not that durable.
Summary: This is a great computer. The video quality is great and you won't believe how clear ant bright the screen is. It plays DVD's very well and due to it's two processors you can do other things at the same time and it won't be slow or stop responding. Battery life is good. I miss a PC Card slot however it has an Express card slot which is a better way to connect things to a laptop. Wireless internet is very fast and steady. The audio sounds weak when it's coming out from the buit in speakers but very powerful and crisp when you use headphones. You can easily connect you digital video camera and burn DVDS using an included software.

Another great thing about this computer is that it's completly ready for the next generation of operational systems called Vista. In fact when you buy this laptop and register it on line they promise to send you a legal copy of the corresponding Vista OS as soon as it comes out for free, so you don't have to worry about having to pay more to upgrade your system.

The fan is veryquiet, so quiet that I thought it wasn't working, you just can't hear it and even though it's quiet it does its job very well because the computer doesn't get as hot as most laptop computers do.

Well, as I said this is a great system, it's not expensive,It's a Sony Vaio(and this means you're dealing with a great company that will offer you a wonderful support in case you need it), and after all of this you need to see how great this PC looks. A very good deal indeed.

Strengths: Display, fully equipped
Weaknesses: battery life, thickness
Summary: If you can't afford a MacBook Pro and for half its price, this is the next best thing. It's sleek, simple and the LCD screen is magnificient. I think it's slightly bigger than some 15.4' notebooks so it feels like a 17' sometimes and I love it!

The processor is super fast. I've ran itunes, winamp, photoshop, a movie, and myspace simultaneously and it still runs very smoothly. The fan rarely comes on and only for about 5 seconds.

Overall...get it!

Strengths: The sony screens are a little better than others, their XBRITE (non-ECO) is great, even better than a stand alone monitor.
Weaknesses: This Sony is much bigger than a regular 15.4 laptop, at least an inch and a half longer (not wider).
Summary: Overall, I like this Sony Vaio. It is FAST! My son was able to play his online game, watch a DVD, and listen to music all at the same time without any time delay or drag. He likes it very much.
