Strengths: Dependable, Good print speed, Low toner cost
Weaknesses: Difficult install, lack of user-friendly refinements
Summary: We purchased this printer as a backup to our HP 3800dtn workhorse. In addition to providing backup duty for the HP printer, the primary needs were light multi-function use and reducing toner costs in a business where we frequently print narrative reports and lots of real estate data sheets. The physical setup instructions were good but the network install instructions could have been written with more clarity, more depth. Our first install attempt failed then we called Dell support. It took 3 calls to Dell to get the printer installed on the network for 3 computers; we still need to install it on a 4th PC later. It took an additional support call to understand how to get the color scanner to work. The printer lacks the extensive user-friendliness of the HP 3800 but it is much cheaper than the HP and it is providing what we need: a good B&W laser backup to the more expensive HP printer and low-volume scanning. We use the Toner Save Mode in the print driver setup to reduce toner costs (HP does not provide a Toner Save Mode in its print driver). Given the low price, the fast print speed, the quick failure of the Brother MFC 9420 printer we tried earlier, and the general limitations of other multi-function printers, we are pleased with the Dell. I rate it at about 3½ stars.
