Summary: To truly Love this Toshiba M2 you MUST Custom configure it!
I was "surprised" it recieved a low ratting on the PCmag review.
I purchased a 1.5Ghz,512mb 1 dimm (upgrade + 512mb Curtical.com to make it 1 GIG Ram total),40gig HD 5,400 14.1 TFT SXGA, XP Pro,64mb ram NVIDIA graphics, Gigabit ethernet,Firewire port, Bluetooth,DVD/CD-RW,802.11g,MS OneNote,IR fast Infared(4Mbps),2 PC slots, 1 SD slot, 240pin Docking connector+DVI connector if use dock,External Mic and headhone connector,RJ-45 LAN & RJ-11 Modem Ports,6-cell primary,12-cell High capacity Battery, Slim SelectBay 2nd battary,Mobility iGo Juice 70 watt combo AC & Auto/Air adapter.Toshiba 3-year SystemGuard & Depot Express $160.00 … total cost with ship $ 2539.73 + 512mb $ 131.95 = $ 2,671.68
* I Love this set up! both as a Travel Notebook for Long trips and a Presentation Notebook with it's many ways to Connect. (the S-video works better than some other brand name Notebooks)
On trips it runs Fast,Cool, quiet, and 11 hours at Normal with 12cell plus the slim-bay battery. A big bonus, no more battary changes on a long flight.
I run Office XP and PhotoShop CS.
At home or during presentations it can be configured light at under 5 pds.
WiFi is solid with Netgear or D-Link routers. Also has worked well in Hotel WiFi, Shangri-La and others.
p.s. the Toshiba Restore OS DVD works fast and flawlessly. Had to use it after my last trip when I installed a "questionable" program in BKK. Now I am never afraid to have to Re-Install the OS on this M2.
What I would change on My config?
Faster,Larger HD option (Hitachi 7k60) at 60gig 7,200rpm. And maybe the WiFi option Atheros internal to see if the Extreme G will work.
Yes, I looked at the IBM R50 and choose the M2 because of the total Value (bang for buck) and the lower cost for the Full System Guard 3 year warrentee. (have already drop'd my M2 once)
p.s. with this config. it is a respectable desktop replacement ... when you have it power an External 21" Monitor and a MS Natural Keyboard & optical mouse as I have.
but, no it's still not my primary computer LOL.
