Strengths: Beautiful screen, styling, processor speed, versatility, easy to navigate
Weaknesses: All USB and Firewire ports are in back. Bottom or side ports would be useful.
Summary: I purchased the 20" iMac with the 2GB ram and 256-bit video card upgrade. I have used nothing but PC's my whole life, but the fluidity of this machine at its price is awesome. The screen is crystal clear and images displayed are fantastic. With 4MB in the L2 cache memory, the Intel processor is amazingly fast. I've also used Boot Camp with Windows XP and did not notice any lack of performance in any of my PC games. The one-piece design and built in wireless adapter allowed me to place it anywhere in the house. I was also impressed to find out the wireless adapter is 802.11n capable with purchase of enabler (It's only $2). I didn't plan on buying a Draft N router yet, but it's nice knowing I don't have to dish out another $100 on the adapter. Widgets are great! It's nice having tools like a Google search box and a dictionary/thesaurus along with other fun mini apps without clutter your main desktop. My girlfriend, who has never been computer savvy, also loves the design and easy-to-use apps (iPhoto, iVideo) included in the iLife 06 package.

I would strongly suggest anyone who is considering the switch from PC to Mac to go out to an Apple Store and demo one of their machines.

Strengths: Convenient and manageable. The ease of setting the machine up and configuring it to one's specifications is so simple.
Weaknesses: None to speak of. I am having to take some of the Pro Care classes to be proficient in using a Mac
Summary: This is a great machine. Switching from PC to Mac has not been too, great a learning curve. There are many similarities. The major differences are the name of applications and the arrangement of the screens/windows. The machine is very fast and runs like you would want a computer to run. The real plus for me is there is no error messages popping up and telling me I've committed a " 'illegal procedure' , and do I want to relay a message back to Microsoft". I have only had one error message with the Mac, and it was a polite message, with a suggestion on how to correct the situation. Wow, I felt like I am in charge and not Microsoft.

I did load the Word suite on to the Mac. And I've added an addition burner. Make sure that any additional software and hardware are Mac suitable. Expect to pay a little more for Mac add ons.

I have no regrets or second thoughts. This is a well designed and laid-out machine. If you are brand new to Mac, take any free classes, and think about signing up for Pro Care. You will find it is worth the money.

Strengths: Great screen color, very vivid, extremely easy to use and understand.
Weaknesses: Manuals not included. If switching from Windows to MAC, you'll need to buy a users manual. No weaknesses that I can see as far as functionality goes.
Summary: I'd finally had it with Windows products for home use. I'm made to use Windows are work and wanted to gain experience with a MAC. I'd been hearing for some time how easy and great the MAC products are and I finally had to find out for myself. Wish I would have bought one sooner!!!! Everything about the set-up was extremely easy!! I though I would have problems since I'd used Windows forever, but I was so relieved and excited to see that MAC was all it said it was and the rumors (good) were right on. Apple has developed a wonderful product!!!

Strengths: Style, style, style, and it work flowlessly
Weaknesses: Fifty percent more expensive than a comperable PC. Sinfully beautiful..Folder access issues that needs to be fixed by APPLE as soon as possible.
Summary: 2007-03-19 16:17:19 UPDATE (19 Mar 2007):

OK. I was quite premature to give 5 stars to this product. Although it is a great product, just because of an important shortcoming of the OS, I have to downgrade the rating to 4 stars (if possible to 3 and a half).

Here is the MAJOR PROBLEM:

The folder structure on the OS X is written in a way that will NOT give full access folder permisssion to more than one user inside the what is called SHARED folder where users can put files to be accessed by all the other isers on the machine (iTunes songs, iPhoto pictures etc.). Means, only and only ONE (1) user can have full read-and-write privilige to anything under this shared folder (as admitted and explained to me by Apple Technical Support person). Well, the problem arises, if you and your significant other like to use the same machine and access to music and photo folders. Either you or she/he can add song to itunes applications. Only way is to manually change the access configuration to each sub-folder. This is not a problem in Windows OS. So, if you intend to use this machine with multiple users and share music and photos, you will not be smiling. More importantly, this restriction that can be overcome by Apple is ignored. I fail to see why Apple try to sell less computers this way. Otherwise, this is a fine machine for a single user.

Also, there is not a single smart application written for MAC OS X that can smartly and easly manage your photo library. Included iPhote has its own mind to file your photo files. This is another Apple suicide attempt to keep savy customers away from its machine..Apple is almost forcing us to not to but this great machines for these type of small but important shortcomings that can easly be fixed in few upgrades and patches. (Original review below:)

Styling of this machine was irresistible. And, it functions no worse than PC, if not better. I really do not understand this big fight of PC vs. MAC. Both systems provide the necessary functionalities. It becomes a matter of preference then.

The machine works well. I have not had a crash or freeze yet. OS X seems to be lighter than Windows. No MS Outlook, I am yet to try the Entourage.

I was told that video and photo editing is superior on MAC. Yet, I learned that Adobe PS’s MAC version is optimized for G processors, not Intel, so Adobe PS actually runs faster on a MAC booted with Windows XP OS (learn about Bootcamp). So, OS X will not perform better than PC until Adobe comes up newer versions of its media software applications.

If you have a legit Windows XP CD with SP2 (must be on one CD), you can install it on an iMac easily with the Bootcamp application. As a result, Windows vs. MAC fight should be over for now.

IMAGE QUALITY: is second to none on this machine. It is probably due to the LCD screen quality where the extra cost kicks in. There is ten percent image quality increase on this machine in comparison to a SONY laptop with true-bright screen.

The white plastic casing lamented with a transparent layer (though toxic it might be at the landfills) is making this machine look like it is from 10 years into the future in comparison to best designed PCs out there.

No towers to hide. It is efficiently designed. The video card is mobile version of ATI but dedicated one. Not a true gamer machine. If you are a gamer, stick with a custom made PC.

On-board sound speakers work great. They are located at the bottom of the screen (which is the entire machine).

Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are included. So, practically, only cable needed is the power cable.

If you can, upgrade the RAM to two (2) gig. It is the most cost effective.

It will allow you to add an extra monitor should you need it. If you do, make sure it is Apple since no other brand makes better monitors.

Apple will come up with a new OS in March 2007. If you can wait, do so. The new OS will have some slight improvements over this one as Apple site states.

I suggest all of you to go the nearest Apple store in the mall and test drive the machine before buying online. Apple website does not do justice to iMac in presentation.

If you are student or government employee, you get about $100 off the price.

Strengths: music editing, photo editing, video editing in that order best to worst even though worst is awesome!
Weaknesses: there are weaknesses on a mac?
Summary: I bought the 20" intel 2.16Ghz, 1GB Ram, 128MB Radeon 250GB hard drive about a month ago. This was my first venture into the light and man am I pleased! I was living in the PC realm since monochrome screens and I just thought that is how computers were! If I would have known life could have been this good I would have been here long ago. Well let me start off with, this mac is super easy to use, just took a little getting used too, (No buttons on the mouse and learning where programs are and where they go and such). The first thing I noticed is the mac starts up about 50% faster than a PC. My music and sound editing was quick and real time not adjust and wait. My photo editing was unsurpassed, as I opened 20 images at 100MB each and it handled/edited them, not like my PC (Same speed and size machine) that locked up after about 10 of them. Last is video editing, it was great but real slow on files over 3GB (I can smell a 3GB memory upgrade coming real soon) but I think that was due to lack of RAM. All in all if you are looking for a computer that will knock the socks off of a windows unit then I think this computer is the one for you, you got to at least check one out and you will be sold. Oh yeah, I have been working on this computer for a month without shutting down just sleeping, and it has not crashed! I can't believe it! Thank You Apple!

Strengths: Intel-chips; Size - as big/thick as a 25" LCD display; Quiet - no major fan noise; Ease of Setup - unpack, plug and play; Equipped with most software; Priced right - it's been coming down steadil
Weaknesses: Additional RAM still expensive; Too few Intel-native programs out there, but ever-increasing.
Summary: This is my 7th Mac dating back to the old LCs. Great product, easy to use, priced appropriately though will come down more as faster versions appear. 1GB RAM is the minimum; I run audio and video productions and will upgrade to 2 (or the max of 3) when the RAM price comes down.

If you're a MacHead, you already know what you're getting; if you're from the "dark side", give it a try; you'll like it - oh yeah, with the "Parallels" software it can run Windows too (but why would you want to do THAT?).

Cheers

3 Star ReviewFrom PC to Mac
Strengths: Extremely easy set up. Beautiful computer
Weaknesses: Not so easy to transition from PC to Mac
Summary: I love the style, speed, and ease of the iMac. I was a old mac user who converted to PC many years ago. I loved it then but just a warning. Additional software is needed to run PC software. Though it's a great system...be prepared to have to pay the steep price for the system as well as additional money for software. Overall, though the system is great, converting is not! So bottom line, don't make the same mistake I did, research, research, and more research for what the "real" cost is.

1 Star ReviewDon't count on getting your rebates!
Strengths: They did have great rebate offers, but you most likey won't get them.
Weaknesses: Rebate time to complete is incredibly short (20 days) so don't order anything from them if it is a gift item!
Summary: These jokers knew that shipments and mail were delayed because of the winter storms, yet they refused my rebates (2 for a total of 34.14) because I missed getting them postmarked by 2 DAYS!! Yes folks, they were ok that my order was delayed despite the fact that I paid for premium shipping, but they screwed me because I couldn't get my mail picked up for 4 days. NEVER RELY ON REBATES FOR GOOD PRICES. They assume less than 30% of the people will actually get them so be advised. Figure their price without the rebates and then buy from anyone else whose price matches theirs or is lower. I have certainly learned my lesson.
