Strengths: Sound quality, large clock display, unique shape
Weaknesses: none apparent
Summary: This Sony alarm clock/radio/cd player is truly unique.
When I first took it out of the box and looked at it, I thought that this looked like a large, white plain m&m because of it's flat, spherical shape (it's about 9-10 inches in diameter, and 3-4 inches tall). To me, it looked less flat and less round in it's advertisement images. Nevertheless, it's shape is actually quite charming.
On checking the cd-playing capability of this little machine, I was pleasantly surprised to see that this was able to play both CD's and CD-RW's. I was also more than pleased with the quality of sound from this "alarm-clock." The crisp sound it produced was more than what I had expected.
The clock display is nice and large (the numbers are nearly an inch in height). Sony has the words "Easy to see clock display" on their box, and they're not kidding. It is VERY easy to see the numbers on this display -- I can conveniently read the time from well across the room. Another convenient feature of this little machine is the dual alarm feature, both of which can be set to the buzzer, CD, or radio.
And speaking of the radio, I was quite happy with its reception and the clarity of sound with which I was able to hear most of the radio stations. That, and the fairly large radio dial making it easy to tune-in stations and very easy to distinguish from the smaller volume control (a particularly wonderful feature when you're waking up to the radio and all you want to do is turn the sound down, and not hear the jarring radio static and noise as you're turning the wrong dial).
The only thing I think maybe this little machine could benefit from having is a bass/treble control. But this clock already has so many great features already, that this additional feature is not that big a deal.
Overall, I'd say the Sony ICF-CD831 is a winner!
