Not bad for the money- if you get it cheap.
Strengths: Conserves space with DVD and VCR in one unit. Has audio hookups in the front, too. Freeze-frame, super-fast rewind & fast-forward. DVD & VCR clarity with factory-recorded products.
Weaknesses: Difficult to program-even if knowledgable. Remote is cluttered with tiny buttons/tiny type/dual function keys and not backlit - VERY confusing. DVD door SLOWWWW.
Summary: Be prepared for crappy self-copied VCR tapes and very frustrating programming.
Very important note, when programming unit to record something in the future, turn off the Timer Set button IF YOU NEED TO USE THE VCR OR CHECK ITS PROGRAMMING FUNCTIONS (even tho you WANT the unit to record at a later time & you WANT to set the timer), otherwise the VCR part of the unit is LOCKED.
This is NOT in the instructions and can be extremely frustrating when the player won't respond to anything but DVD functioning no matter which buttons are pressed (including Power)!
But, don't forget to turn that Timer Set back on again, else your programs won't record! :)
Other than that crazy fluke, the rest is relatively minor.
Although, I did read one reviewer who said that despite what the manual says, this unit will NOT play Region 0 DVDs. Or at least his didn't. Haven't tried it yet.
The 5-times, 10-times, and 15-times-fast fast-forwarding and previewing while viewing a DVD can be disconcerting at first and takes time getting used to.
It's so fast you sometimes speed to the end (or beginning) without meaning to!
(Again, this is partially because the remote is such a hindrance.)
Freeze Frame and Magnify is useful, too, as is the super slo-mo where you can clearly view each frame of a film, one at a time, seeing aspects you might never have noticed.
In all, this is a decent unit with just a few quirks, some of which could be overcome, possibly, with a high quality universal remote.
