Strengths: Good Sound, Easy setup S-video in, Optical Out
Weaknesses: Slow changer
Summary: 2004-08-12 14:58:55 I have had this system for about 3 months, and I have been very pleased with it. I installed it myself; it was a snap. It plays DVD's, MP3's, CD's, CD-R's, CDRWs and everything else I have thrown at it. The sound quality is excellent with good channel separation. My favorite feature is its S-Video in. I have a replay TV and it allows me to watch everything I record in surround sound, and I don't have to get up to switch inputs (my TV only has 1 S-Video input.) The only downside to it is the changer is a little slow. I think this is an inherent problem with all of this type of changer as opposed to the turntable type. The payoff is that it has a much smaller form factor. It also has some type of circuit breaker inside for short circuits. When I first installed it, it would cut out if there was loud sound from the DVD. I would reboot it, and I was very upset that I was having this problem. I eventually looked closely at the speakers (I installed plates on the wall for a professional look.) and I noticed that a couple of the tiny wires on the plate were touching the other post and shorting it. Once I fixed it, I haven't had any problems. Clearly some good preventative thought went into the design b/c if there had not been the cutout feature, I'm sure I would have blown the system. The system also has an automatic sound setup. You put it into setup mode and clap loudly. It measures the distance from the claps and automatically adjusts the levels for each speaker. Very handy. It supports all the major surround sound formats. In summary, I have been very happy. The sound fills my large, vaulted ceiling living room, and it plays everything flawlessly.
