Strengths: Very easy to set up (compared to more pricey systems). Nice looking components. Almost everything needed to set up is included. Super sound! Great tuner reception even in our fringe area.
Weaknesses: Instructions on how to adjust individual speaker volume with the test tone are difficult to find and understand. Cannot get the remote to control my DVD and VHS players.
Summary: 2005-12-11 22:33:33 We bought this system to replace an old stereo. We are VERY happy with the sound quality, especially since this is one of the least expensive home theater systems available (= awesome). It has few plugs on the back and everything except hardware to mount the speakers is included, so the setup is fairly easy (for a home theater system). The tuner easily "locks on" to radio stations (AM and FM) even in our fringe reception area, so even weaker signals allow distortion free AM and stereo FM listening.
The weaknesses mentioned above were the only problems I encountered. I was eventually able to get the individual speaker volume levels adjusted. However, I cannot get my DVD and VHS players to work with this remote (they are not Sony brand; that may be the problem).
For the price, I highly recommend this product! This is definitely an excellent system and value for anyone who is buying a first-time home theater or is on a limited budget.
One final note; the output is listed as 70 watts per channel in the owner's manual specifications (not 100 watts). For us this is still much more power than we need in our average size living room.

Strengths: Low low price, good sounding quality that fills small room
Weaknesses: lack of inputs for other audio/video functions, have to turn volume way up to hear movies
Summary: 2005-07-08 05:59:16 Bought this for $149 at Radio Shack for a real small room. It fills the room nicely....the sub is powerful and the small speakers have decent range...for $149 you can't go wrong. This is only an audio receiver...you cant run your video through it like other high end receivers...the speaker wires are cheap, but effective; however, I've heard if you upgrade those you dont have to turn the volume up as high...also, hope your DVD player seconds as a CD player as it has no inputs for an auxiliary, cassette, XBox/Playstation, or CD Player...just video and DVD

Strengths: Very clear sound, even when turned up really loud. Nice subwoofer. Good price, I bought it on Black Friday at Fry's for $149.
Weaknesses: Not that hard to setup if you know what you're doing.
Summary: 2004-12-13 17:25:55 The 5 speakers are small, about the size of 2 soda cans put together. There are no speaker stands included so you'll have to buy those if you need it, otherwise you can just leave them around the room. I am very satisfied.

Strengths: Small speaker size, great sound definition, movie theater like experience
Weaknesses: Difficulty with setup in terms of dvd setup
Summary: The first thing I noticed is the small size of the speakers, which was a plus for me. Then when I finally set it all up (it took about 2 hours or so, due to my difficulty figuring out how to play the video sound via the receiver), I was thouroughly impressed with the sound, especially w/5.1, which is what I desired. It filled the room w/o being painfully loud. The distortion (or lack there of) was excellent. A good buy.

Strengths: Sound quality, Sony name, speaker size.
Weaknesses: Initial set-up a pain (wiring, hanging speakers, etc.)...but that would be the case with any new surround system...
Summary: For the money....you cannot go wrong. Speakers are small enough to put almost anywhere. Go to eBay for cheap universal wall mounts or speaker stands. Once the set-up is completed...and you tweak the settings....you will definitely be impressed by this system. I stay up late at night to watch TV, and even with the volume real low....the quality of the surround sound is great.....and visa versa. If I have people over to watch an action movie....the system delivers excellent volume and booming bass when required. Although this is not a monster 1000 watt system that damages your ears....to the person who appreciates quality over quantity...this is for you.

Strengths: Sound quality, good price.
Weaknesses: Design. No speaker stands included.
Summary: I've bought this system for a very good price. In my opinion, Sony is a brand you can trust and once more I'm not disappointed. Now I have a very good quality sound in my room. You have to buy the speaker stands an those aren't included in the box.
I found other products with a better designs, but this one is great considering the price I got it.
