Strengths: Yamaha Quality; Variety of Sound fields; component video switching
Weaknesses: No backlit remote
Summary: I bought this receiver because I needed component video switching for my projector. Overall, it is an excellent entry level audio/video receiver.

The receiver is very easy to setup for your home and easy to use. It has two component inputs which seem to do a very good job without any noticeable signal loss. The remote is well laid out and easy to use. The only downside is there is no backlighting.

I bought this receiver to replace a six year old Sony ES receiver. I haven't noticed any difference in the sound quality. Overall, an excellent entry/mid level receiver for home theater!

    Product Experience:
    2 Months
Strengths: Good sound, highly configurable, looks sharp
Weaknesses: backlight on remote would be nice
Summary: This is the receiver included with the YHT-450 Home Theater In A Box. I've had this thing for over two months and can't find any real fault with it. There's not a lot of space around where I have it set up, but it doesn't seem to get hot. The remote is easy to use. Setup is reasonably intuitive and there are lots of options.

Construction: The unit is black with an amber display (the brightness is adjustable). It looks very nice in my cabinet. It's fairly heavy, almost 25 lbs, and it feels solid. Posts on the back for the speaker connections (instead of spring clips) guarantee good connections.

Sound: I use this mostly for two-channel music, and I'm very happy with the sound. I don't care for the digital effects. I want decent power and low distortion, and this unit delivers. At high volumes I sometimes find the highs to be a bit harsh - I'm not sure if that's my cheap speakers or the receiver. One remark about the power rating: the included documentation says 85W/channel but it's noticeably more powerful than my old 100W Sony receiver.

Final thoughts: Among the $300 home theater receivers there is probably not much difference. None of them is audiophile-grade; one can safely disregard reviews making such claims. Differences in power ratings can be misleading. I chose this model because it sounds good, the construction seemed more solid than that of the other models I was considering, and because it looks good. I am pleased with it; I'm considering buying another for my study.

Strengths: Sound clarity
Weaknesses: Borderline power
Summary: The Yamaha HTR-5740 Receiver has crisp sound clarity and many device inputs. It also has many sound effects that can be used to reproduce any input signal. However, I like an amp that shakes the house such as my fifteen year old Sony (may it rest in peace) and while this receiver has nice clarity I personally wouldn't mind more power.

Strengths: YAMAHA QUALITY,POWER,LOOKS,FEATURES,EASE OF USE,YAMAHA
Weaknesses: SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT REMOTE
Summary: THIS IS THE FIFTH YAMAHA PRODUCT I HAVE BOUGHT OVER THE PAST TWENTY FIVE YEARS AND KEEP BUYING BECAUSE OF THEIR QUALITY AND SOUND. I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE PRODUCT PROBLEM AND ONLY BUY NEWER PRODUCTS AS FEATURES ARE ADDED NOT PREVIOUSLY AVAILABLE.I BELIEVE YAMAHA PRODUCTS ARE THE FINEST PRODUCTS IN THEIR PRICE RANGE.

Strengths: Flexible remote, easy menu setup (including an auto setup option), numerous input/output options.
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: I purchased the unit from Best Buy as part of a package. The receiver came with the JBL 6.1 speaker system and was priced at $300. Couldn't pass it up.

I've been happy with the receiver. Setup was easy, sound quality is fine, remote is well laid out.

This is not a top of the line unit, so don't expect too much. But for the average user like me, it's a great unit for a great price.

Strengths: Neat & easy to use with excellent performance for price
Weaknesses: For the price, few cons. 1. Observed noize when walkman is connected to AUX input. Tried to isolate the problem, removed all electronic gadgets near, but problem persists. 2. Limited number of inputs
Summary: 2006-11-27 22:44:28 Looking for a decent priced, good quality receiver, nice features; then Yamaha is the way to go. I have checked many receivers before making the decision. For the money, I was ready to invest, I found this to be the best.

1. Easy to Use. Using controls on Receiver as well as the Remote is very easy & intuitive.

2. Lovely product for the price

3. Helpful Yamaha customer service when questions asked.

4. Sturdy Piece; I have moved the receiver many times in UPS/USPS boxes, but no problem. Dropped the receiver from 5-6 inches height while packing for a move, it survived, no problems.

...

n. For the price I paid, I am enjoying every moment of my movie viewing and music listening.

Strengths: I'm quite happy with this unit. Manual seems pretty straightforward. Great sound for the price.
Weaknesses: Speaker input connections are a little flimsy in the back of the unit if using bare wire, but acceptable.
Summary: Bought this unit for $250 from Vanns, for the price it's everything I need. Was gonna go with Denon, but BestBuy salesman suggested I go with a Yamaha receiver in my price range instead.
