Strengths: You have no choice but have to buy it to pretect the lens.
Weaknesses: The lens adapter is loose.
The lens hood is not retractable; it does not have an outer thread to allow a filter or lense cap; it blocks the flash.
Summary:
This item is good to have to protect the lens of the Canon S1 IS. Otherwise you may end of cleaning the lens every time after going out to beach or some theme parks where you get water spray on the lens easily. The ONLY way to add protection to your lens is to buy this item. Plus, you will need a 52mm UV filter and/or a 52mm lens cap.
The package comes with two items: lens adapter and hood.
The lens adapter can be easily mounted in front of the camera. It has a 52mm thread so you can put on a 52mm filter and/or a lens cap to protect the lens. Or you can put on the 0.5X and 2X conversion lenses in front of the adapter. I can tell from the first minute that the adapter does not snatch tightly and it may fall off. It's probably common since it's built with 100% plastic. It actually went off once and my filter and hood dropped to the floor. Fortunately I didn't but the more expensive conversion lenses on it.
The lens hood is kind of useless. It's not retractable so it takes a lot of room. The hood doesn't have an outer thread to put on a lens cap. What this means is, if you directly put the lens hood in front of the adapter, your lens is still not protected. You can always put a UV filter on the adapter and then thread the hood on to the UV filter, but the filter will get dirty very soon since you can't put on a lens cap to cover the filter. Finally, you are not supposed to use the lens hood when shooting indoor pictures with the flash. The hood blocks the flash and you will see a big black shadow on top of the pictures.
