    2 Weeks
Strengths: Price ($50 after rebate for me) Easy setup
Weaknesses: visual appearance
Summary: I read the other reviews here and did not see enough concrete facts to scare me off of this product, so I gave it a chance. I'm glad I did. In my case, setup was quite easy and all I had to do was follow the quick install guide.

First off, I went to the Dlink website, downloaded the manual, looked over the last few pages and verified my HP 960c was on the list of supported printers. This list is a couple pages long.

The quick install guide describes connecting the print server to a switch/router for initial configuration. This is the approach I used. To be fair, the setup steps do mention changing one of your computer's IP addresses to the same subnet as the print server. BUT for many users of a private network (e.g. a home network) this step can actually be skipped. The default IP and subnet used by the print server conform to the private internet address space (see RFC 1918). Its likely your network also conforms to this. My home network did, so I did not have to change the IP address or subnet on any of my PCs or on the print server.

After connecting the print server to my router, I had to log on to my router and view the "connected devices" so as to find the IP address of the print server. My router is setup for DHCP, so the print server did not get the default IP address listed in the install guide. Not much of a surprise there.

After that I just followed the remaining steps in the quick install guide and was printing a test page from my Win XP machine in about 10-15 minutes.

As another reviewer pointed out, when configuring the print server via its web interface you want to click "Apply" on each page before moving to the next page otherwise you will loose any changes made on the current page.

I also will point out that the quick install guide only describes the setup for Win XP machines, but I did follow directions on the Dlink website for setup of a Win 98 machines and had no issues. I presume the manual describes setup for other OSes, but I did not actually check. But again, the manual is online so you can read before you buy.

I do use 64-bit WEP encryption on my home network and the print server had no problems handling that. My wireless router is also a Dlink (DI-624).

I am a highly experienced computer user. I have built several PCs and I write software for a living. But the only wireless networking experience I have (which I think is the most important here) is setting up my home network.

Strengths: Fast tech support
Weaknesses: Does not support many printers
Summary: I spent over 3 hours trying to get this printer server to work with no luck. A call to tech support was promptly answered (the only reason there is even one star) and I was informed that my printer was not supported (an HP OfficeJet G85xi)! Well, normally that might be understandable, but there was no indication on the box, web site or printed quick installation guide that only some printers are supported. The full 88-page user manual, on the enclosed CD-ROM, has two pages at the back that list supported printers (not many). To access that same manual from their web site requires that you download it and unzip it.

Even if your printer is supported, be prepared for an involved installation process (the box claims "Easy Installation"). Anything that requires manually setting a computer's IP address is not something for a casual user to undertake. I've programmed computers for years, and installed a few networks at work and home, and it was still a slow installation.

Finally, if you connect directly to the server with your computer, you need to use a cross-over Ethernet cable. That was something else not clear from the supplied installation instructions.

This was my first experience with a D-Link product, and it may be my last.

Strengths: Good range, small and light-weight. The support staff extremely helpfull and did absolutely everything to help.
Weaknesses: Instructions are written in Techspeak. The quick setup guide is too limited and the full guide is incomprehensible
Summary: 2005-08-13 11:27:14 It's taken me a month to get this item working but is great now it is.

I returned the first 1 to base when all that was wrong was the setup, and then the replacement unit sent was D.O.A. All the lights and setup looked good but it wouldn't print.

The third one was printing within 5min's of unpacking it.

The support staff were all very helpful and a delight to talk to but here's some tips which would have saved weeks of trouble.

To setup the DP-G310 you will need a LAN cable.

If you are setting it up from your Router you will need a STRAIGHT-THROUGH.

If you plug it into your computer directly you will need a CROSSOVER.

If you are setting it up to work with a Wireless Router (I have a D-Link DSL-G604T) you will need to change the print-server's IP into the same range,

ie the Router's IP is 192.168.1.1

so you will need to change the Print Server's IP

from 192.168.0.10

to 192.168.1.10

Press 'Apply' after every change.

That done and the rest of the setup is easy(ish

2 Star ReviewI have a combo wireless and Ethernet home network. ...
Strengths: None
Weaknesses: Does not support WPA PSK even though the Dlink flagship DI-624 router does making the DP-G310 less capable
Summary: I have a combo wireless and Ethernet home network. My router is Dlink 624 (Super G and WPA PSK). Before purchasing, I didn’t know that the DP-G310 did not support WPA PSK. You might expect that the only Super G WI print server offered by Dlink would be 100% compatible with their wireless super G router (DI-624) but that’s not the case. Dlink tech support didn’t know if a firmware upgrade to give the DP-G310 WPA PSA capability was in works or not. Without WPA PSA in the DP-G310, your choices are: (a) lower the router and wireless devices to the less secure WEP setting; (b) connect the DP-G310 to Ethernet; or (c) don’t buy the DP-G310. I’m using (b) because I have an Ethernet outlet in the location where I have the printer but the wireless function is useless to me without WAP so I would have saved $ by purchasing an Ethernet only print server instead.

Strengths: Small & compact. Works really well!
Weaknesses: Can get a little warm. Otherwise, nothing else that I can think of!
Summary: Setting this up was so simple and straightforward. Plugin to LAN or computer and configure wireless options first, then go wireless. I had to do this because I have WEP enabled. It was quick and pain-free. I'm so happy now that I can print off my color printer from anywhere around the apartment!

Strengths: Nice packaging
Weaknesses: An absolute pain to set up.
Summary: Could not get a direct connection with LAN cable from my laptop (HPZD7020) "Cable not connected" Purchased a router DLINK G604T after much pain and agony managed to find that the ip address had changed. logged in to server and found that manual address of the default ip address was still the same had had not changed. Never did work that one out! In the manual it says to select LPR. This did not work for me. I have a canon i9950. Just had to try something else to get printer to work. Select RAW format and ignore the portname. I found no help in the online cd help manual. It has taken me over a week to finaly get it to work with my laptop. I am yet to establish it on my desktop

Strengths: Easy setup if your router is already using the IP range of the print server.
Weaknesses: Wish it had two way communications with the printer.
Summary: I'm using a D-Link DI-624 router, so I didn't have to change the print server's IP address. I did modify the setup based on other recommendations that I found on the web. I'll summarize here:

1. Connect the DP-G310 via regular ethernet cable to your router. Don't connect the printer yet. Power up the print server and log in per the instructions to the print server. If you can't log in, follow instructions to change your computer's IP address within the print server's range.

2. Once you enter the DP-G310's set up page, do the setup per the instructions.

3. Write down the name of the printer port as directed. You'll need it later.

4. Power down the DP-G310 and disconnect the ethernet cable. Power it back up. It takes about 30 seconds to establish the connection with your router. The WLAN light should come on and stay lit. Now go back and try entering the DP-G310 web setup page again. If you can, you have a good wireless connection. If you can't or the WLAN light doesn't come on, you'll need to go back to a wired connection and make sure your setting are correct.

5. Now hook up your printer to the DP-G310 and power the printer on. Follow the instructions to set up the printer.

1 Star ReviewDoesn't Work, Save Your Money and Frustration
Strengths: None. nada Nothing
Weaknesses: Doesn't work
Summary: It took me my entire Saturday night trying to get this print server to work with my printer. I follow the exact instruction step by step. In the end, I looked up DLINK support webpage. There are only a small list of printers which this wireless server will support.

To see if your printer is supported, you actually have to go to the print server configuration webpage. If your printer status is idle at the configuration page when you send a test plot. Then your printer is not supported.

All in all. this is an outdated product which can only support a handful of outdated printer

Strengths: solid product
Weaknesses: none
Summary: 2005-08-20 18:09:53 I was shopping around for a good wireless printer server until I found a great deal on this printer server. This print server works great and don't believe all that fuss about how hard it is to network you computers. I'm somewhat of a newbie and I had no problems with this server. Just follow the directions from manual and it works pretty good and fast.

1 Star ReviewDlink DP-G310 Wireless Printer Server: You get what you pay for.
Strengths: Good Signal strength. Easy Interface. Good Value
Weaknesses: Does not work with a variety of printers. No workarounds. Dlink support is sparse at best. Does not come with a RJ45 cable and/or a USB cable
Summary:

I tried using it with my samsung and minolta printers. Unfortantely it does not work with either of them. There is no workaround. Dlink does not acknowledge that on the box or explicitly on their website. Its a good price... but frankly you get what you pay for. To setup the DP-G310 you will need a LAN cable. Dlink should either supply it or explicitly state that on the box. I somehow do not recommend it at all. Pay slightly more and buy a better print server. Mine is going back.

Summary: 2005-08-20 10:21:36 I found this wireless print server to be a good value for the money. Setup was fairly intuitive and it was pretty much plug and play. Reliable, would buy again.
