Strengths: *Widescreen display
*nice gfx(ATI M-Radeon 9600)
*Athlon 64, of course
*fairly rugged, but not too heavy
*built in wi-fi(802.11g)!!
*you get all this for a pretty nice price
Weaknesses: *GODAWFUL speakers and built in sound--no MIDI support whatsoever--i suppose that's about par for laptops though
*There is currently no support for this model on the emachines website (STILL!)
Summary: When i bought this, I was kind of in a pinch. I was going on a trip, but i needed to finish a program for C++ class. Thus i needed a laptop right away. I basically bought it b/c it was the only laptop i could find locally that had an athlon64 (which i think is a way-cool processor). Other than that, i did very little research. (ok, i read the spec-sheet on the side of the box and that was it! ;)
It has turned out to be great though. Only bad part is the sound, but most laptops do have crap sound. It kinda sucks for me cuz I do alot of studio recording via PC, and the standard audio capabilities of this computer don't really allow me to do much work. Especially with audio files or midi. Cakewalk Project 5 and fruity loops (software synth programs) work well enough, but the speakers are horrible and the amplifier must be like 3 watts...
Given the length of time that the Athlon 64 has been out and given the fact that AMD will soon be releasing the new Athlon 64 for Socket 939, I imagine that the price of the Socket 745 Athlon 64s will drop very shortly. Therefore, I'm not certain I would recommend this particular model.
Emachines does not lower the price of a specific model just b/c the processors MSRP goes down. Instead, they try to manufacture just enough to meet demand and no more (smart business model, imo). Therefore they will prolly release new athlon 64 models soon. just a thought...
