Strengths: Touch screen controls, Bluetooth paring for cell phones, Ipod interface, XM interface,
Weaknesses: No avi player. Not hd-radio.
Summary: Xdvd8285 is Awesome!!!
It does everything it says it will do and tons of harness for the add-ons.
I have 07 F150 and I had to purchase antenna adapter($10 Bestbuy), radio harness ($20 Bestbuy) and doble din mounting kit($20 from Circuit city). I'm sure you can buy it from any of those stores (if stocked) or on-line (cheaper).
Installation was pretty standard.
I've soldered two harnesses(radio harness and the one came with Xdvd8285) together and the rest was just snap snap.
Pulled my old radio out, installed antenna adapter, installed harness, mounted plastic frame to xdvd8285 (the screw stud and rubber piece for the back panel was perfect fit for my f150) and bolted on to dash with a frame it came with on mounting kit. It was a snap.
Yea, I did run the ipod cable included(I did not used the extension) behind to my glove compartment so I can hook up ipod and leave the ipod in glove compartment (hidden away).
Everything works like a charm.
Radio works good. The freq. setting is easy with many different sound pre-set or user settings.
My Ipod works perfect. Even the video works good (make sure set the ipod video setting to tv out).
The wiring to emergency brake ground (for DVD play)is somewhat funky. (I would take a trip to good old Radio Shack and purchase a mini push button switch(normally closed)and solder in-line to a ground instead of emergeny brake. When I need it I will just give couple of pushes simulating setting of emergency brake twice like manual says. It works like a charm (you only have to do it once as long as engine is running). I mean it would work like a charm. ;) wink ;) wink.
The bluetooth speaker phone pairs fast(samsung A940)and works perfect (quality of sound is better than expected. 4 out of 5 stars).
DVD works flawless so far.
I don't have a XM yet so I can't say much about it but it's nice to have it available in-case I need it for later.
I wish it had a capability of AVI play. I would have glad to pay more the function.
It's a 4 and 1/2 stars(-1/4 star for the lack of avi file support and another -1/4 for the not hd-radio) overall, because it's nice design, easy to install, many functions built in inside and lots of add on capability outside.
You get all that for the half the price of name brands. That is lot of savings to average joes like me.
Built in bluetooth was selling point for me.
You can't go wrong with this product.
