1 Star ReviewWarning, Audio does not work properly.
Strengths: None I can think of now, before the crash I would have said it was fast.
Weaknesses: On board items not the best
Summary: I bought the XPS 400, and upgraded almost all of the items except for the sound card. This was a mistake. Since day one the on board sound card was faulty. I would have to reboot the computer often to get sound to surf the internet, play music, etc.

I finally got tired of it and went to their on-line chat and talked to Dell about it and they said that if the drivers didn't work to get an additional sound card, so I did.

I installed the sound card, it got to the end of the driver install, the computer froze and wouldn't start back up again. I called Dell tech support, got some foreign guy that I could barely understand. He eventually made me do a PC Restore to get rid of the problem. After I hung up, my computer was so slow that I ended up having to take it to a shop in town. Dell tech support killed my computer. They should have sent someone out to fix my computer not made me do something that was not recommended by any PC tech in town. Also, when my computer was slow, the computer decided to do a defrag on my external HD and it crashed! I lost years worth of data. I am very unhappy with Dell right now.

1 Star ReviewWarning, reboot almost all the time
Strengths: None
Weaknesses: froze every time I visted a web site
Summary: I have asked Dell for advise and they have informed me that I need to do a PC restore.. This problem has been on going for approximately 6 months. I purchased a tech support packaged with Dell and I'm still having problems. I'm not getting the support I thought I would get. At this point I'm really disappointed in Dell.

Strengths: Basic included hardware is ample to run Windows Vista
Weaknesses: NOT Core 2 Duo Upgradeable
Summary: I have found Dell refurbished XPS 400 Pentium D computers selling in the neighborhood of $450 and have purchased more than one at this price. Dell refurbished computers come with software already loaded and with restoration CD's, keyboard, mouse, and mousepad. The refurbished units do not ship with a monitor at these prices but a monitor may be selected from the Dell Outlet. The Dell refurbished XPS 410 can be had for about $200 USD more than a XPS 400. The Dell XPS 410 supports Core 2 Duo Intel processors by default if that is something that you need and are willing to pay extra.

I am not an avid gamer, and not a graphics professional, so I really have no need for the bleeding edge Core 2 Duo processor at this time. Should that time come in the future, I will again return for a newer refurbished unit.

The Dell refurbished XPS 400 at $450 USD is one third to one half the orignal configured price new depending on the number of options installed. Not a bad deal for a six month old computer.
