Strengths: True hardware RAID, rock stable operation in both Windows and Linux, high transfer speeds, very good driver support, good technical support.
Weaknesses: More expensive than the usual 'onboard' RAID solutions.
Summary: I bought my first 3ware controller, a 7506, specifically because the stock Linux kernel contains a driver for 3ware controllers written and maintained by 3ware engineers.
By now I use two more 3ware RAID controllers and they are operating just as reliably as the first 7506. I recommend 3ware for fast and reliable storage solutions.
In my opinion the higher purchase price of 3ware as compared to e.g. Promise is money well spent, even more so if you run Linux.
