Good, but quirky.
Strengths: Compact, easy to load with info via USB, reasonable playback quality.
Weaknesses: Navigation awkward and buggy, even with new firmware.
Summary: Overall, I'd say the TVisto is a decent device for those that don't want a full-blown media PC sitting by the TV to play MP3's, show pictures, and play movies. With a reasonably large harddrive, one can store a lot of media. Of course, without networking capability, you'll be moving it closer to a computer to update the content, but that doesn't seem to be an issue. The weakest thing about it seems to be the way the remote/navigation interacts with the unit itself. For example, if you're playing video, you have to explicitly hit the "stop" button before moving to other content or a different movie. Also, the navigation around directory structures is a bit limited; if you leave playing a video, there isn't an easy way to "go up one directory" that I've found. Sometimes the unit I have stops responding to the remote while playing content; the content continues to play, but it requires a hard reset to get it to stop. Overall, even with the limitations, it gets the job done. It might have a little bit of a learning curve for "mom," but with a bit of the old "if it breaks, reboot it" training, it is perfectly functional.
