Strengths: Versatile (plays DVD+-R & +-RW,MP3,WMI,JPEG,DivX,VCD,CD,VCR).HDMI hookup.Records great quality DVDs with ease.Records VCR to DVD all in 1 unit. Can edit menu & chapters after DVD recording.
Weaknesses: Unit must analyze dvd before you can eject it (takes too long).Fast forward/rewind function not accurate when stopping dvd or vcr.Have to reset resolution to 480i each time to view on HD tv.
Summary: I use the DR-MV7S mainly to view dvd movies & record tv shows on dvd.The picture quality of dvd movies is awesome. The recorded dvds are like the original program when set at xp.It's so easy to record & edit tv programs to dvd.I usually record programs onto my DVR before transfering it to my DVD.This makes it easier to edit.I also use the unit to transfer my VCR tapes to DVD.The quality is descent but nothing compares to DVD.At least the VCR tapes are preserved on DVDs.I also like the fact that you can edit the menu even after you recorded programs on dvd.I also watch slide shows of photos I took with my digital camera.I would highly recommend the JVC DR-MV7S for anyone who likes to record anything to DVD.I never thought recording could be so simple.I only wished that they invented this machine years ago.

Strengths: Easy to hook up and added benefit of the HDMI cable. View VCR and DVD on HDMI TV output
Weaknesses: Can not copy HBO or other movies using DVD-, +, or RW+. Have not tried DVDRW- as yet.
Summary: Overall pleased to date. Easy to hook up and use. Easy to use menu and options on screen. Cured problem with past JVC DVD/VCR issues with "loading" and inability to read dvd's.

1 Star ReviewPoor service and ridiculous warranty
Strengths: Dont know because it has never worked!
Weaknesses: Dont know because it has never worked!
Summary: I hope this review keeps someone from getting a lemon like me.

I Bought this unit to record TV shows from my DVR and transfer old video tape and DV tape to DVD for preservation. I had the unit about 4 months when I first got around to trying to copy some tape. The unit will not recognize any format of disc. I have tried several; dvd-r, dvd+r, dvd-rw, dvd+rw. None are reconized by the unit.

Took the unit to an authorized JVC repair center. They require a $69.00 diagnostic fee just to see what the problem is. Warranty only covers labor for 3 months! Looks like I am going to drop $69.00 on the diagnostics and about $200+ in labor to repair a unit that has never once copied a single thing. JVC "customer care" is not helpful in any way, might as well be non-existent.

Everyone be VERY CAUTIOUS purchasing JVC products. I suggest immediately opening up the unit and trying it out before their ridiculous warranty expires and you get screwed like I did.
