Strengths: Built in xm tuner (not simply "xm-ready); Amazing sound clarity; cool, sleak design; mx bass engine feature creates very rich sound.
Weaknesses: No mp3 playback capability =( ; the user interface could be a bit more simple-- small buttons are bunched together and its easy to touch the wrong one by mistake, complicated bass, trebble controls.
Summary: I had a cda9820xm installed after my Sky-fi unit got stolen from my Jeep Wrangler in Coconut Grove in Miami. Along with the factrory radio cassette player, I also replaced the original factory speakers, which were very poor in quality. I used a pair of Pioneer 6 1/2" in the soundbar along the rollbar and a pair of Sony 6" by 4" in the dash. So far, I'm very pleased. Despite the small size of my speaker system, the Alpine stereo sounds terrific and suprisingly full -- especially with its mx sound feature activated. I can only imagine what the system will sound like when I add a subwoofer, which will be discreetly supported by the cda 9820xm. The unit looks great in the dash, even though the original factory radio it replaced was at least one and a half times its size. I've heard others comment on how the display washes out in sunlight. That is true, but a bigger problem with the display, I think, is the small amount of xm track information it can display at one time. I guess I was spoiled by my sky-fi's dot-matrix style display, which could at once display not only the name of the musician, but also the name of the song and the name of the xm channel. Finally, I wis that the cda9820xm could play mp3 discs. Due to a misreading of the manufacturer's specifications, I thought it could play mp3s when I had it installed. I was surprised to learn that it cannot. Even so, the cda9820xm seemlessly integrates its other music sources and is definitely worth its price.
