Toshiba 23HLV86 23 High Definition LCD TV w/ DVD Y

Terrible, disastrous choice - avoid if possible

Strengths: Compact size, good HDTV features, can be wall mounted (many this size cannot)

Weaknesses: Built-in DVD player is close to useless, horrible tech support

Summary: I purchased this set and wall-mounted it before testing it thoroughly. Huge, giant mistake. It turns out that the DVD player will play only MOST commercial DVDs, and virtually NO non-commercial DVDs. Toshiba's own tech support (which was completely ignorant about what "dual layer" meant regarding DVDs) says it will not play any recordable media with "+" in the name, so that excludes DVD+R, DVD+RW, and DVD+R DL. It also will not play any dual layer media, so that excludes DVD-R DL. I was told that it "probably" would not play any rewritable media, so that excludes DVD-RW. It is supposed to play DVD-R, but I tried more than a dozen disks, from different manufacturers, and I couldn't find even one that would play. I'm not talking about region-encoding problems, my kid's birthday videos wouldn't play.

It also has problems playing even some commercial DVDs. For example, it won't play parts of ever Dreamcast DVDs, such as "Gladiator", instead dissolving into digital mush. It won't play some episodic commercial DVDs, for example the "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" TV show comilations. Toshiba confirms there is nothing wrong with my particular device, it just doesn't play "some" disks.

This is an OK HDTV set. But the DVD player might as well not be there.

Excellent TV

Strengths: The picture is very clear while viewing in HD. Has built in DVD.Has good sound.

Weaknesses: Regular Tv is a bit fuzzy, wires are very dificult to acess and are not labeled on base.

Summary: This TV is used in our gaming room for the kids. For the price of this TV and the hours of game time it provides it is a great valve. I found it very difficult to hook up the 5.1 system to the TV and get it to work. The directions were hard to understand or not giving enough information.

Either a bad choice or I just got a lemon

Strengths: Good size, DVD

Weaknesses: Warranty too short.

Summary: 2008-04-03 10:29:03 I purchased this tv in 11/2006, over 1 year ago. Initally it was great. Just about the time the warranty ran out, I started seeing white vertical lines on one side of the screen and I don't mean the edge. The lines are on the entire right side. On a dark screen, the white really shows. Now they are so noticable and irritating. Of course the warranty is out so I am stuck with it. I have only played one DVD in the player and it worked just fine. That was around 4 months of ownership, so I do not know how it will play now. I could have just got a lemon, but I am soured on Toshiba. I am now in the market for a larger (52") LCD, but it will not be a Toshiba. I have attempted to add an image of what I am talking about. Hope it comes through.

Edited 4/3/08. Contacted Toshiba regarding my TV. Toshiba agreed to cover 75% of the repair cost even though the warranty had just expired. I now have my TV back and it is working great. So credit to Toshiba for customer service and doing the right thing. Toshiba is now back on my list for future electronic purchases.

Toshiba 23HLV86 23 High Definition LCD TV w/ DVD

Strengths: wall mountable, upconverting built in dvd player, light weight, nice sound, great color

Weaknesses: the carrying handle is nice but once in place, it might need to come off if it bothers you.

Summary: this tv was other second one of the two of these that we purchased and it was for my grandmother. she needed a new tv and she knew that we were looking for one of these for our beach place, so she told us to find one and just buy two of them and she would pay me for it.

she absolutely fell in love with this tv. she keeps my cousins kids most of the week during work hours and she loves the fact that the tv has a built in dvd player. she can pop curious george or bob the builder in and those kids will sit there until they fall asleep. the quality of this tv is excellent and for the price you can not go wrong. after getting this tv, she was saying that if she ever has to replace another tv, she would definitely go with something like this in the future.

Toshiba 23HLV86 23 High Definition LCD TV w/ built in dvd player

Strengths: good size for a small bedroom, great picture, sound is better than i thought it would be, upconverting built in dvd player, wall mountable

Weaknesses: the plastic cover covering where the wires go seems a little odd due to its size but if you are not running many wires to it i don't think you would have a problem.

Summary: we bought two of these at a great price, one was for our new beach place to go into a bedroom and the other was for my grandmother. she was needed a new tv to go in her living room and it was pefect for it too. on to the comment for ours.

we needed a tv for our other bedroom and this toshiba filled that void for us. this tv is wall mountable so that is good if you must hang it but for the time being we decided to sit it on the countertop. the built in dvd player is a great option to have and it also upconverts. the tv supports all types of connections so basically any application you have would work on this tv. we didn't hook it to an hd box but the picture is clear and sharp. we could have also gone with a cheaper brand with this tv but we for the extra money, you can get this one and know that you are getting something that is quality!

Strengths: Great picture quality and performance. Very happy with the product!

Weaknesses: Non

Summary: We love the quality and the picture. The size worked out perfect for a bedroom/den area. Toshiba always has a great product and we trust them for all our entertainment needs.

Great TV for the price

Strengths: Plays DivX DVDs

Weaknesses: Does not have memory slots

Summary: At first when I bought this TV - I did not know that this TV could play DivX movies - Non of the websites, including Toshiba mentions anything about this TV playing DivX movies - I was happy and surprised to find this out after purchase - A GREAT BUY for anyone.
