Strengths: inexpensive, tasty, can make yogurt the way you like best!
Weaknesses: would like to have auto on/off.
Summary: I will never go back to store bought. I also have never eaten so much yogurt! I make another batch as soon as I have one load finished. I purchased the starter from here also it is in a green/teal package and makes 2 liters(8 cups) per package of starter. I like to leave it on 6-8 hours. Make sure everything you use is clean and your thermometer is accurate. Toppings I have used: granola type cereals, steevia an all natural sweetener, a good jam with little or no sugar added, fresh fruits; bananas, blueberries, strawberries, pineapple, nothing, vanilla and cinnamon, the options are endless! It usually works best to add toppings when you eat it. Honey can be added in the cooking process as can dried milk if desired. I found it to be helpful to add a thickness and creaminess so I use dried milk a lot (1/2 cup added before you heat milk). The quart size is great for so many reasons. You can put it in small containers if you want but you have the whole thing to make cheese which is really good, frozen yogurt, also sauces and a replacement for sour cream. All you have to do is set the yogurt in cheese cloth, wrap it up put it in a fine mesh strainer and let it sit in the fridge, dripping into a bowl. Even better add a small plate with a can on top and the pressure makes it work a bit faster. Any spices added need to be in small quantities because it really takes on the flavor of the spice. I would have never purchased the single serving one unless I had this first. It just makes things easier. The only thing this machine lacks is an auto shut off/timer. There is a reminder feature at the top but it does nothing more than let you pick which hour you have to unplug it. I strongly reccomend this yogurt maker.

Strengths: Make yogurt by yourself becomes very easy and you can have whatever flavor you like.
Weaknesses: N/A
Summary: I like the salton yogurt maker very much. It's small and easy to use. Whenever you want, you can make your own yogurt at home easily. The only problem is it takes time to get the yogurt ready. It's cheap and well made. My kids like the homemade yogurt very much. It's worth the money.

Strengths: Easy to use, store and clean.
Weaknesses: No automatic shut-off & it doesn't boil the milk.
Summary: I bought this to make "custom-flavored" yogurt as I'm tired of the usual flavors that the stores sell. I just tried making my first batch yesterday - and it came out great. Only thing is that you have to boil the milk on the stovetop first, let it cool down to about 100 - 110 degrees, then add the starter. I added frozen mango slices and maple syrup to this first batch, and it tasted great. If you like making food from scratch, you might like making your own home-made yogurt with this appliance.

Strengths: Easy, cheap, yogurt turns out perfect
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I love this yogurt maker. After looking at several expensive models I decided to take a chance on this one. I figured if I didn't like it I wouldn't be out much money. I am really glad I bi passed the expensive models for this one. Making yogurt is easy and all that is really needed is something to keep it at a constant temperature for so many hours. Some people use an oven but mine doesn't have a setting for that low plus it would hog up the oven for the 4-8 hours it takes to make the yogurt. The Salton does exactly as it is supposed to - hold the yogurt at a constant temperature. The rest is easy. I just wish I had bought it several months earlier instead of wasting all my time looking at fancier models.

Strengths: Nice size. Works exactly the ay it has been advertised. It makes yogurt making at home very easy.
Weaknesses: Size could have been a little bigger
Summary: I have been using this yogurt maker for last 10 days, and it has made our life much easier as far as getting home made yogurt is concerned. Now we don't have to worry about the temperature of the milk before putting it away for the yogurt. It is very simple to use. Another great product from salton.

Strengths: easy to use
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: bought and have used it many times now and it makes fantastic yogurt with no aditives and from milk I trust. A hint buy wide mouth quart mason brand jars and use them and throw out the plastic tub. The jar has lids and can be used to heat the milk and make the yogurt and store it. A much better solution in my opinion and it works great for making more when you have only a little left. I have been totally pleased and am sorry I didn't do it before. Oh the four stars come from the plastic tub and no mention of the jars in the manual that would make it a six star unit.

Strengths: MAKE QUALITY YOGURT
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: 2007-01-16 09:50:57 Look...making yogurt isn't that compicated. All you need is a good starter culture, a stable and appropriate temperature and clean equipment so you get the proper cultures growing. The Salton 1-quart does a beautiful job and you can't beat the price. If you've never made your own yogurt before, this is the unit to buy. Don't spend tons of money on a piece of equipment that does nothing more than keep the milk warm for a few hours. Realize, it is much easier to just buy yogurt at the supermarket. But if you don't like keep buying little plastic containers, and if you don't mind going to just a little effort to make your own foods, you'll enjoy making yogurt. I like to use milk straight from the bulk tank at a local dairy farm and either organic Stonyfield (NH)or organic Butterworks (VT) yogurt as a starter. Homemade yogurt doesn't always have the homogenous and solid consistency of store-bought, but I've had very good results (quite comparable with commercial yogurts) with the Salton, plus I can use whatever flavorings I want from real maple syrup to my favorite jams. I even use the yogurt in place of sour cream. The possibilities with home-made yogurt are almost unlimited!

Strengths: Compact size, neat lid with serving spoon
Weaknesses: None found yet!
Summary: My first batch was perfect! We just moved to a town where organic yogurt is $4 a quart. I figure this appliance will pay for itself in two months. The yogurt was creamy and firm after 8 hours of incubation. And it is very cute -- I call it R2D2.

Strengths: easy to use.
Weaknesses: Need an On/Off button
Summary: I used this machin to make yogurt myself. It's easy to use. Just put milke and some yogurt in it and turn it on for several hours then yogurt is done. This machine is very convient to use. Never worry about the temperature for most. And it's easy to clean. If there is an ON/Off button it will be better.

Strengths: Price, works.
Weaknesses: No handles to carry or lift out of warming canister. Lids no not lock. No thermometer
Summary: I had a yogurt maker years ago and decided to eat more yogurt so bought this one. I waited for awhile and ened up buying from Amazon.com Friday Sale. Great price. I made the yogurt the night it came. I was surprised that there was not even a cheap plastic Thermometer included. Having the correct temp is crucial. I had to feel the milk to determine when it was cool enough. You pour the milk into a tub, cover it with its lid. Put that tub into the outer warming canister (the picture that you see on the web site, looks like R2D2) and cover that with its lid. Unfortuanatly, neither lid lock. They site loosely on top. Also after its done you need to stick BOTH hands in to lift out the tub of yogurt. Even removing from the fridge I need to carry carefully so it wont spill. This must be a design flaw.
Other than that, I am happy with it. It makes a quart of yogurt overnight. If only there was some way to lock or seal the yogurt storage tub so it won't spill. After I saw what the yogurt maker was, I thought that i could probally put the milk mixture in the oven with only the pilot light on and get yogurt the next morning.
