Strengths: Ease of installation, speed, reliability
Weaknesses: Software
Summary: I have used this for 2 weeks now, and have no problems, as long as I used good media. I have found shareware software to be easier to use, than the software that came with the drive. For the price ($50 after Rebate for me) it was well worth it.

Strengths: smaller size Lite-On SOHW-812S drive
Weaknesses: software. MyDVD software and Power DVD.
Summary: 2004-04-14 09:19:11 Install was smooth. Quiet drive. Not very good instructions but drive was plug and play. Came with cables, and audio connectors and two disks with very little documentation for included software.

Strengths: Is actually a lite-on 811S DVD-/+R RW. Half size unit. Very quiet.
Weaknesses: Writes 8x DVD+r, but only 4x DVD-R (if that is any weakness).
Summary: Purchased it with a rebate and found a Lite-on 811s in the box. Have not tried the 8x DVD+R feature, yet. But, 4x works flawlessly. Came with MyDVD software and Power DVD in retail box. Placed it in an external enclosure (Plumax), it works fine there. Very pleased, so far.

Strengths: Price. Stable.
Weaknesses: It's a rebadged LiteOn drive. Come with softwares are terrible.
Summary: It's a pretty stable drive. I was hoping for a NEC2500A inside but it ended up with a LiteOn 811S. It's not too bad with it's speed. I have burned several CD-Rs and DVD-/+Rs and DVD+RW and almost no coaster (only one and it's my fault). But the software that comes with it is terrible. One of them is Roxio and it is unusable on my computer as it crashes (with a terrible blue screen I have never seen before) everytime I tried to launch the program. I reinstalled and reinstalled again and the same thing happened. I ended up buying a Nero to use with it.

Strengths: Reads DVDs, writes 2X DVD-R, burns CDs fine.
Weaknesses: Won't write to 4X DVD-R, doesn't work as advertised.
Summary: Piece of crap. Writes on 2X-DVD media (barely available nowadays), won't write on 4X DVD-R media from several manufacturers. Thought it was software at first, but turns out to be the drive itself. It's advertised as being able to write to 8X + and - R media, but I doubt it will based on my experience. Back to the store with it to start again.

Strengths: No bad burn so far even with value DVD+-R/RW.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: If you burn movies, then use good name brands of blank media. I burn my value DVDs for data/pics backup only.
With the 16X DL burner going cheaper, better buy this one for less than $30, not more.

Strengths: Good price.
Weaknesses: None.
Summary: It has none problems with all the media I have tested. I did not use the burning software came with it. Nero, which is my favorite, works great with it.

Strengths: Low price (and I got what I paid for)
Weaknesses: Uh...doesn't work.
Summary: I believe I got this at OfficeMax with a rebate, so it ended up being very cheap for me, or even free (sorry, I forget now). I can't seem to get it to work consistently. It's burned some CDs for me, but often I'll finish burning and then look in the drive, and Windows will say it's empty. ??? I upgraded the firmware, but that didn't help. It may just be an incompatibility with my motherboard and chipset, I don't know. Others seem to be happy with the drive. I'll probably switch to something more established, like HP or Sony.

Strengths: Burns both formats
Weaknesses: hard to install and get system to reccognize the unit.
Summary: Bought this one to replace a CD-RW. I had a hard time determining the right setting and then the system wouldn't recognise the unit. It may work better as a replacement for a bad DVD burner but I don't reccammend it for replacing CDRW.
