Strengths: Automatic sensing and selection of either high or low setting. More reliable than cheaper units. Overload circuit breaker reset button, unlike cheaper units. High/Low indicator lights.
Weaknesses: Heavier and bulkier than some competing units. Cannot leave plugged in for extended periods. No fuse protection. Cannot be used with appliances that have a ALCI ground fault interrupter (reset).
Summary: I had a Sharper Image switchable unit, also made by Franzus, literally blow up on me in Europe (these cheaper units are also marketed as Travelwise in department stores).
This Franzus Travelsmart unit worked like a charm with US hair dryers, etc. Converts 220/240 electricity to 120/110 so you can use your appliances overseas. Automatically sensed if the appliance was 0-50 watts of 51-1000 watts and set itself accordingly. With units you set the switch yourself, that can harm or destroy your appliance if you select the wrong setting.
