Summary: What can I say....I always wanted to own these in college but never had the money to. Its been 4 years since, I recently managed to get my hands on one of the last remaining sets through underground channels and all I can say is Altec Lansing's ACS 48 Powercube system sill rules. You'd think multimedia sound technology would have advanced enough in these past 4 years to overtake the ingenuity of sound acoustics that go into the ACS 48 but no --- forget klipsch, forget even bose for what they offer for mp3 audiophiles (or even altec lansing's new ATP range.)

The original ACS 48, no longer available at stores is ladies and gentlemen the definitive 3 speaker system for your computer. Unfortunately, a lot of you shall be going to your grave having never heard these. You haven't lived life to the fullest if you havent heard or own Altec Lansing's ACS 48 powercube system. No other computer speakers on this planet offer clearer vocals at midrange or higher and there is not the slightest distortion at the highest volume (but you'd burn out the tweeter in no time if u played ur ACS48 in the 12 o clock position all the time and u dont wanna do that coz u'll never find a pair ever again). Crank the sub up 90 degrees and you got plaster peeling off the walls.

And oh yeah..if God takes pity on you and drops you a free set from heaven, make sure you have a top of the line soundcard because these speakers have an uncanny ability to expose chinks in anything less than the best.

Strengths: BOOM woofer! lots of power, clear sound, small
Weaknesses: button volume control? give me a break!
Summary: like i said, LOTS of power! you won't find this much power for this price (currently $175 Cdn). Doesn't matter if you get 4-point surround speakers if they are only 5W each with a 10W woofer. i tried the altec lansing ACS54(?) and they weren't worth the price at the time (although a lot cheaper now). Here you get 40W woofer and 20W satellites, small enough so they don't take up too much room. only bad thing is that they don't have a knob for volume control, so you don't know what level you last left them at. the other thing is they are still seemingly expensive for only 2 speakers, so people who are not in the know will tend towards the cheaper and inferior 4-speaker offerings. don't be fooled! try these out! the only thing better are Klipsh speakers, and that's if you have $400+ lying around.

Strengths: Durability Power
Weaknesses: Volume control setup
Summary: The speakers are wonderful to have. They've lasted through the years reproducing sounds quite nicely. The bass outpowers many of the current systems and maintains clarity and the higher ranges are produced well also.

I do have some dislikes with the volume control setup though. The bass volume knob is on the back of the sub and the only other volume controls are on the top of the right sat. At the time Treble and bass werent' really found on adjustment knobs and so they can't be held against these.

The speakers offer lots of kick for the money and are by and far one of the best 2.1 systems around to date. You'll get years of enjoyment if you treat them right when breaking them in. I have yet to even change the fuse.
