3 Star ReviewIt's good with some problems.
Strengths: looks great, core duo, builtin camera, stereo mics, quiet
Weaknesses: bizarrely designed 12 cell battery, touchpad is sticky, heavy, loose battery, heavy
Summary: At first blush, it's a beautiful laptop. I've been using ultraportables for a while and the keyboard strikes me as really big even though it's just normal sized. The screen is nice and bright. I got the 8 hour 12 cell battery and it's ridiculous. A hacksaw might be in order to trim it back down to a 6 cell. They could have easily made it stick out the back like all the other laptops. But instead it sticks out the bottom on a little over half the laptop. Hence if you use it as a laptop on your lap, it sits titled. Not smart HP. The battery is also loose. It's not snug like on my Dell. It moves around even though it's locked in place. I don't like it. The only other problem is the touchpad. It's not textured but smooth. The problem is that if your fingers aren't bone dry, they tend to stick instead of sliding smoothly. I constantly have to wipe my finger on my shirt to dry it out and I have really dry skin.

But having those problems is offset by a Core Duo machine at a bargain price. I got mine for $400, can't beat that. The built-in bluetooth would have been nice, but I neglected to get it.

All in all, it's a keeper but I don't think it'll replace my Dell 700m like I planned. It's just to heavy and bulky with the odd battery placement to really carry around all day which kind of defeats the purpose of having an 8 hour battery. But to have a Core Duo computer in the house, it's worth it at $400. At the normal price of $1200, I would return it. Anyone want to trade a 6 cell for my 12?

Strengths: Solid design, great looks, Core Duo chip, quickplay, great price!
Weaknesses: Webcam doesn't have good resolution and can't be rotated. Run a bit on the hot side while performing certain tasks. Too many useless junk softwares were preinstalled.
Summary: This is my first HP laptop and I must say I'm impressed with the quality and design of this model. It has a "high quality" appearance and feel to it, unlike my Dell latops. The unit feels sturdy when in use. The glossy screen is smooth and lively. The laptop feels responsive overall. The wireless and bluetooth connection works without a hitch. The side and weigh of this laptop is great compared to other 14' widescreen models out there.

What I would improve is the resolution of the webcam. It's too low compared to my Logitech and you cannot adjust the angle of the webcam or rotate it. I would also want to add a faster harddrive which would make opening/closing and using programs feel snappier.

All in all, it's an excellent laptop that I got for a great price with a free after rebate all-in-one printer at Office Depot. My specs for this unit are: 1.66 Core Duo, 1GB RAM, CD+RW DVD, B/G wireless with bluetooth, 6 cell battery, remote control.

Strengths: Thin, good looks, processor
Weaknesses: Design flaws
Summary: This is a great looking laptop, but thats offset if you get the 12 cell battery like I did. Its huge and protrudes out of the the bottom of the laptop. Its also offset to one side so the laptop doesn't sit evenly on your lap. If the screen could open a little further that would be helpful, especially with the 12 cell battery tilting the laptop up at an angle.

As you can see most of what I don't like about this laptop revolve around the 12 cell battery and the problems it causes.

Strengths: Core Duo, Webcam, great design, trubrite screen
Weaknesses: HP
Summary: This is super slick design lappy. I used to carry a small webcam with me, and now having a built-in webcam is super cool. I selected CD-R/DVD version to save some money and selected bluetooth for $10 more, I did not use the bluetooth yet. I think 60GB HDD is enough for a lappy, if you need more space go for an external HDD. Enjoy...

Strengths: Great laptop - dual core processor. Integrated webcam
Weaknesses: Gets a bit hot after 1 hour of usage. Tons of junk and unnecessary pre-installed software
Summary: I have been using the laptop for the past three weeks. It has been great to use - good speed for most of the standard applications.

Gosh - it comes with a tons of junk software from HP. Backup of the hard disk asked me for 14 disks - are you kidding me? Why would I want to back up all this junk. Re-installation while maintaining the quickplay functionality was a pain. The laptop gets hot after 1 hour of usage- thought i guess it is normal for most of the laptops.

Overall, once you re-install it is a great laptop.

Strengths: Sleek looks, integrated webcam, Core duo
Weaknesses: Webcam quality is average, no DVD writer
Summary: Excellent, sleek laptop. I use it for school. Very light. Quite fast even with just 512 MB, probably due to the core duo. You may want to upgrade the RAM and the hard disk. I got integrated bluetooth and use it with a headset for skype. The inbuilt webcam is very handy, though the quality is not very good.

Strengths: Duo Core, Thin and Light, Webcam, great design, trubrite screen
Weaknesses: Need more memory, too many preinstalled software.
Summary: I got it for only $400, it is such a steal for a Duo Core laptop. It is still heavier than dell 700m. WebCam is also cool. LCD is very beautiful.

Strengths: Dual Core for an amazing price, sleek exterior, Quickplay controls make it a good entertainment PC (esp the volume buttons), customizable so can upgrade whatever you want.
Weaknesses: 12 Cell Battery makes it really heavy and ugly. The battery sticks out the back and raises the laptop, unlike Thinkpad or Dell extra batteries which just stick out the back.
Summary: I really love this notebook. It is versatile and powerful. However, b/c I have the 12 cell battery, I use it mostly as a desktop replacement (too heavy to lug around). the 14 inch widescreen is pretty small and takes time to get used to. I'd really recommend getting DVD burner upgrade b/c you have to make ur own recovery disks (14 cd-r's... frustrating.)

Strengths: webcam, compact, media reader, sleek design, latchless screen, blue LEDs, dual core.
Weaknesses: battery life could be a bit better, no recovery cds, confusing driver and software installation.
Summary: Wow, I got in on a very good deal on this laptop. I have owned 2 laptops, and they both have been HPs. I must say that I have been very happy with both. I love the convenience of the webcam, although it is only a so-so quality webcam. Some people don't like the way the screen opens and closes without a latch, but I do. I think it's unique and easier to manage. The design is awesome. I'm a big fan of black/silver, and the subtle patterns on the palmrest and lcd back add a nice finishing touch to the laptop, along with the nice blue LEDs. I opted for the dvd burner, although it is a Pioneer, and burn quality is not all that great (if you care about that sort of thing). The media reader is nice, although a lack of Compact Flash support sucks for me b/c that is what my camera uses. Dual core is very nice, and I can process video and music faster than my Athlon64 desktop. Battery life is better than my previous laptop, though I still think it could be better. I get about 2:30 surfing with wifi on half brightness. But then again, I only got the standard battery and not the high-capacity one because it looks funny and sticks out. Speaking of wifi, the intel built-in Intel wireless is awesome, and picks up my Netgear router at home (on the other side of the house about 27 feet and two walls away) and wireless network at work with an excellent signal all the time.

Now for the bad...No recovery CDs. I don't like how alot of laptops and PCs nowadays come without recovery CDs. Luckily my previous HP laptop came with a Windows XP Home CD, so I was able to use it. I did backup EVERYTHING before I wiped my drive, following the recommendation of other users who went there before me. I made the recovery discs on DVDs instead of CDs, 3 DVDs instead of around 15 CDs. I suggest you do the same. I also backed up the SWSETUP directory on the C: drive, since that is where all the drivers are at, because some of them MIGHT not be available for download from support.hp.com. Also, after you finish installing all the drivers, there will be one left that should say something like PCI device (don't quote me on that name), all you have to do is load the default secondary IDE channel for it. This driver is in XP already, you just select "choose driver to install" and point it to "Standard IDE ATA/ATAPI.." and select "Secondary IDE Channel". Don't know why that is so, but it worked for me and others who have posted it in forums. There are other quirks that I ran into, especially with the HD audio and bluetooth, but I can't remember the details. But for those and the rest of the drivers, if you download them from HP and install in the correct order according to the instructions, then you should be ok...just be patient. I'm a PC guy, but I'm not really looking forward to a fresh installation of Windows on this laptop. Not really the laptop's fault, just the way the drivers are written for certain components inside. Another thing is that the USB ports are really tight and requires a certain amount of force to insert and take out devices, such as a USB flash drive. I guess the good thing is that you get a sure and tight connection, but I'm always having to be extra careful when plugging in or pulling out a device...it definitely requires both hands.

Overall, this is still one awesome laptop. It is the perfect size for me and has all I need for what I want to do on it. If you want to game, then this is not the laptop for you. For everyday work, surfing, music, and movies, it is great. It is a nice compact size, not heavy, but I would not call it lightweight either, but it is light enought for me to tote around. My previous laptop was a 15.4" widescreen HP, and it was too big and heavy for me. I must say that I love my new laptop.

Strengths: sleek design, core duo, built in webcam, screen brightness, lightweight, quiet
Weaknesses: too many preinstalled software, hard drive gets a bit warm
Summary: This laptop is compact and light enough for travel. I like its sleek design. The screen is bright and not so reflective. Core duo is more powerful than celeron I owned before and last longer. I highly recommend it.

Strengths: Looks great. Nice screen.
Weaknesses: Sleek surface attracts fingerprints. battery only lasts about 3 hours.
Summary: I've been using this laptop for about 3 months and I don't have any major complains so far. This is one of the best looking laptops out there. I am glad that PC makers are starting to care more about how their products look. The quick play feature also seems nice. You can play DVD without booting up the computer. There is still a minor wait to boot up and shut down the DVD player. The only minor complaint I have is that the battery only lasts about 3 hours. Also, the standard 512mb of RAM is not enough for some applications nowadays. If you use Photoshop CS2, you will definitely need to upgrade the RAM.

Strengths: CPU performance, media slots, remote control, webcam
Weaknesses: preloaded junkware, support, industrial design, display quality
Summary: 2006-10-04 11:36:21 The greatest strength of this laptop is the performance of the Core Duo CPU and dual channel DDR2 RAM. My only quibble is that HP supplies PC4200 RAM instead of PC5300. There should at least be an upgrade option.

I also like the built in media slots, the 3 USB ports, the webcam and microphones (although the image quality is poor), and the (optional) remote control.

The biggest problem is the ton of junkware that comes preloaded. HP doesn't include restore disks, so you have to make your own (3 DVDs or too many CDs). Then you have a choice of uninstalling all the junk, or starting over from the restore disks. Either way, it takes hours to get the computer to a usable state.

I also think that the industrial design emphasizes form over function. The smooth computer finish shows every fingerprint and is very hard to keep clean. It's much less practical than the old textured finish. The lack of a latch for the lid as trendy, but again less practical.

The 1280x800 LCD panel used on this model doesn't seem as good as the 1280x768 panel HP used to use. The ClearType tuner helps a little though.

It's a little odd that the built-in Ethernet NIC is only 100BT. You can get a 1000BT ExpressCard, but they are expensive.

HP support can be very frustrating to deal with. It's slow (whether phone call, email, or chat) and the first level techs often seem clueless, sticking to their scripts no matter what. However, if you can manage to get to the second level techs, they are pretty good.

Strengths: cool design, built-in webcam and mic
Weaknesses: no battery time left, micphone, remote control
Summary: firstly, super cool for the design. I have a dell laptop and it can't compare with this laptop. This one is light and very quiet. another thing which I really like is build-in webcam and mic.

but, it only show percentage of battery left, didn't show the left of time. when you use build-in micphone for skype, the other side will notice the noise from cpu fan.

the remote control is very cool except it is hard to get out from slot.

this laptop didn't come with any operation system and drivers cd, so, there are a few more work to do if you want to format laptop and reinstall it by yourself.

all in all, since I get this laptop in very good deal, so, I am really very happy have it.

some weakness needs to mention;non- flexible keyboard.

Touchpad 's not textured but smooth
