Unacceptable Customer Service - Polaroid FLM-1911
Strengths: Price
Weaknesses: Overall quality, Polaroid Warranty Service
Summary: I purchased this TV in December 2006 as a small set for our bedroom. I do not consider myself an AV enthusiast - just wanted a nice little LCD TV to watch before going to bed.
Picture Quality:
I do not have HD service - just plain cable service. I had to go to and adjust a "Fine Tuning" setting for every channel to improve the quality. There is no master setting for all channels, which is very annoying. You will read other reviews talking about "ghosting". The best description of this problem would be the effect of standing in a dark room while looking at curtains that had a light source coming from behind them. In other words, when the screen is dark, you will see a slight glow around the edges. Since I'm not overly picky, and this TV is meant for the bedroom and not a "high end AV experience", I learned to live with it. You may think otherwise.
Audio:
The sound quality is just plain poor - no two ways around it.
Customer Service:
I purchased the set December 2006. In July 2007, the set went dead. No picture, no sound, nothing. I had to rebox the TV and ship it back to Polaroid for full warranty service ($65 expense). They received the set on August 3rd. After a few weeks I sent an email asking for an update, and was given the following response from Polaroid (exact quote):
"Your television, model FLM-1911, is still on back order. If a product is on back order it typically takes 4-6 weeks from the submission date to become available."
To recap, the set was of marginal quality to begin with, was completely worthless after 7 months, and Polaroid has taken over 3 weeks and has yet to send a replacement. If you purchase this set from a department/electronics store, I strongly advise you to ask about their "store warranty". I normally do not purchase them, but if it allows you to return the set to them if anything goes wrong and keeps you from having to deal with Polaroid, then it's worth it. If you still have to deal with Polaroid during the 1st year (standard full warranty), purchase from a different manufacturer.
Just my 2 cents...
