Strengths: Low price, HDMI output, DVD RAM and dual layer capabilty, Good quality recording even at longer recording time
Weaknesses: Compability issue with some home made DVDs..
Summary: Overall, I would rate this as an excellent DVD Recorder with HDMI output. It has everything I was looking for. This is one of the best recorder at this price range. The only issue I had was that I was able to play some of the DVds i burned out of my computer. So if you want to play lots of home brew DVDs, you might want to think about. Else, go for it, you wont regret.

Strengths: Good value. Simple design. Easy to setup. Crisp user-interface.
Weaknesses: Front design a bit to be desired. Open mechanism a bit clunky. Disc at a full spin-up can make high-pitched noise (if you can hear such things).
Summary: I bought this unit on a Black Friday special to replace a failing Astar DVD recorder that I had.

This unit is much better. It has a better remote, nice crisp user interface, and a lot more stable. Supports many more format.

The Panasonic DMR-ES25S is a great value for entry-level DVD recorders. You would have to pay a bit more to step up to a better unit.

I bought this for basic reocrding. I have not tested the HDMI upconverting quality, although I would suspect that it would be acceptable. I would buy this unit again. Just wish the front design was a bit more modern.

Strengths: Quick setup, easy to use, supports a range of formats, good amount of options and features, HDMI input, quality upconversion
Weaknesses: Lackluster remote
Summary: I'm a bit inept when it comes to DVD recorders, and this is actually the first one I have ever owned or operated. As such, I didn't want anything too fancy, but I also didn't want something inferior. I chose this one because I was able to get it for a good price, and I have had good experience with Panasonic products. The unit's ability to upconvert DVDs attracted me, as well. I'm not crazy about the remote (it's a bit awkward and doesn't have a good range), but other than that, the DMR-ES25S suits my needs and turned out to be a great buy. With it, I can painlessly record my favorite TV shows, conveniently preserve my crusty VHS tapes/home movies, and view DVDs in ultra-sharp resolution.

Strengths: Quality of HDMI upconversion, HDMI out, quiety machine.
Weaknesses: wish it was all black to match LCD/TV
Summary: Panasonic has the best commercial skip around. This machine is quiet and reliable. I have previously owned panny dvr's and they are the best bang for the buck. The LP-4 hour mode was invented by Panasonic and a nice touch. Will buy this brand again.

2 Star ReviewFor All Widescreen 16x9 Recordings it is only a DVD-RAM recorder!
Strengths: Good picture and sound quality. It reads my mini DV tape (Cannon) by Firewire, but it is not a “lossless” transfer.
Weaknesses: If you want to edit chapters OR want to record in wide screen 16x9(many cable broadcasts are now in widescreen), this is ONLY A DVD-RAM DISC RECORDER! DVD-RAM discs will not play on most players.
Summary: The DMR-ES25S is a big disappointment! I bought it to transfer my 16x9 mini DV tape home videos. This recorder will only allow chapter edits, useful menus and Wide Screen (16x9) format on DVD-RAM discs. Anyone that does not have a DVD-RAM compatible player CAN NOT play your discs (most current home players are not compatible). I had to buy a new DVD writer that was DVD-RAM compatible for my computer. The current available choices of DVD-RAM media are very limited at this time (try to find the max 5 times disc). As of this time (weeks of hunting, trying multiple software titles and no help from Panasonic) I can find no way to convert this slow read/write DVD-RAM disc on my computer to the much more used DVD-R or DVD+R format and still preserve the wide screen format (will only read in at 3 times). I can not share my home video with family and friends unless they buy a DVD-RAM drive!

The recorder will record full screen on DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW discs, but there are no real menus or chapter edits and it will not record widescreen (16x9) on these media.

There are many lacking standard remote features, so playback can be tiresome.

If you don’t believe me, get and read the manual from Panasonic before you buy.

If you intend to use this as a CD/MP3 player with your stereo, be warned that you need to have your TV on to tell which track is currently being played. The recorder front display shows only the current song time and will not display any track information.

I am not a novice at making DVD movies on a home computer, and bought this to free up my computer.

I had never heard of DVD-RAM discs before and I doubt if they last.

Strengths: HDMI upconversion for playback, front AV and Firewire ports, SD slot.
Weaknesses: Design is very plain and basic-looking. Kind of loud when DVD loads as well as during playback.
Summary: While not the lowest end DVD recorder on the market, the design of it screams "basic." The design is very plain; this recorder is definitely a case of function over form. It is also kind of noisy. The price point is reasonable--not exhorbitant, but certainly not a bargain.

That being said, it does its designed job well. It has all the inputs you would want in a DVD recorder, including front composite and S-video inputs as well as a 4-pin Firewire input jack. As an added touch, it also includes a built-in SD slot.

For playback, it includes the basic outputs (composite, S-video, component) as well as HDMI upconversion, a definite beneficial feature.

Panasonic is one of the best brands as far as DVD recorders, and I would recommend this one to anyone. Just don't expect to be wowed by the design.

Strengths: Multi format rec/play including DVD-Ram. HD Up converter. 8 hour recording is also available.
Weaknesses: Would be nice if they included an HDMI cable since it offers the up converter. Does not appear to be a battery back up for the clock.
Summary: Fairly easy to use, very good intruction manual.

Picture is clearer/sharper then other DVD recorders that I currently own. Have only owned it one week but, so far, no problems.

It does require a few additional steps to finalize the DVD after recording then my Liteon 5005 but, as stated above, the picture is much clearer which is more important.

Strengths: Sleek appearance, Multi-format recording, HDMI interface
Weaknesses: None so far
Summary: This is my second DVD recorder. It is a wonderful piece of equipment with HDMI output, up-conversion capability, capability to record on almost all formats including DVD-RAM, multiple inputs. Very easy to set up. I have had no problems with it so far. Highly recommended.

Strengths: Very easy to use
Weaknesses: I haven't found any yet
Summary: I bought this recorder for the sole purpose of transferring VHS, Hi-8, and MiniDV tapes to DVD. After unpacking and popping in a disc, I created my first transfer in no time.

I used a DVD+R, but it only creates chapters every 8 min versus 5 min for a DVD-R so I'm going to try those next.

It's not clear to me in the manual how to create a chapter on the fly while transferring - I'm not even sure you can do this unless you use the DVD-RAM discs, but those are not compatible with many machines, so I am staying away from that. Otherwise it's great.

NOTE: I did read in the manual, that the SD card slot will only transfer images to a DVD-RAM disc!!! That is no good as too few players use DVD-RAM.
