Strengths: The color enrichment brought out in HD are superior as well as the detail of people in various scenes. I am impressed with the quality of the production.
Weaknesses: Some scenes are somewhat out of focus in the background but wonder if that is avoidable.
Summary: The HDV 5000 was very easy to set up with little or no complications. The on screen instructions make it understandable and the function buttons on the remote control are easy to work with. I found the unit heavier and a little bulkier than expected and the red standby light a little bright.

Strengths: Plays HD DVDs and upcoverts SD DVDs. Nice image quality. User upgradable firmware. Good build quality. network capability.
Weaknesses: Load time is too long (near 2 min). Too bulky. Can't play some newer HD DVDs out of the box, although a firmware upgrade can take care of that.
Summary: One of the first HD DVD players on the market. It is virtually identical to a Toshiba model. The improvement of HD DVD over standard DVD is remarkable. Seeing "Shooter" on HD DVD is a treat to the eyes. It can't play the "Planet Earth" series HD DVDs out of the box. I had to do a firmware upgrade through the internet. The upgrade took too long-nearly 1 hour. It fixed the playback issue, and improved the load time a bit. A bonus is that this player upcoverts your old DVDs to 1080i/720p. It makes the SD DVD look better. The price of this HD DVD player is dropping, making it a bargain.
