Summary: When I started looking to purchase a cordless telephone, I knew I wanted very good sound quality during a call, Caller ID, an answering machine, multiple handsets, and a phone that looked cool & modern. This GE set fit the bill.
First of all, this phone uses 5.8 GHz frequency, one of the newest frequencies. Since it is new, the 5.8 band apparently doesn't get as much interference as other bands from other wireless devices. I've never experienced interference on any other frequencies, so I wasn't too concerned about that, but nonetheless I am impressed with the zero interference encountered on this phone.
This phone is analog, not digital. I read somewhere that analog phones have better sound quality, but digital phones have better security, meaning that on an analog line, it may be easier for a hacker to listen in on a call. I'm not paranoid about security like that, so I picked analog because of the better sound quality.
The sound quality is one area that this phone excels in. The calls are very clear, and there is adjustable volume on the handset. Messages on the answering machine are also very clear. (Note, I use VOIP phone service.)
Setting up this phone was very straightforward and explained well in the instructions. On the answering machine, you can record your message or use the standard greeting supplied with the machine. There is an indicator which displays how many messages you have.
The phones support Caller ID. Once I lived with Caller ID, I would never want to live without it. This phone allows you to choose if the area code is displayed on the Caller ID or not. It also saves the 40 most recent calls so you can scroll through and dial. You may also program 10 numbers of your own into the phone. I find it strange that the phone can store 40 recent calls but only 10 numbers in addition to that. I would prefer a little larger memory.
This phone unfortunately does not have speakerphone. When I bought it I didn't care one way or the other about having speakerphone. It wasn't till I called a company and found out I was #46 in line for customer service that I wished I had speakerphone, so I could wait on hold without holding the handset. But for me, this doesn't happen very often, so lack of speakerphone isn't that bad.
Pricegrabber says that this phone has lighted keys for dialing in the dark; this is not the case. Only the talk/end button and Caller ID display are lighted.
Overall, I am very satisfied with this GE phone. I like how it looks and works. I couldn't be happier with the sound quality and answering machine, and the ease of use. No speakerphone is a drawback, but the pros definitely outweigh the cons of this phone.
