Strengths: Nice slim design that matches up well with the Samsung 27" hd TV design; easy record feature; quick playback time; good title options
Weaknesses: Only records on DVD-R or R/W. Have to finalize the DVD R/W in order to play on other DVD players.
Summary: I bought this due the low price and that it fits in well with the 27" Samsung TV I bought at the same time. I have it hooked up using component video cables and the quality is excellent for DVD movies. Recording quality on the slowest speed is excellent - can hardly tell the difference between the live broadcast and DVD copy. Easy set-up and timer control.

Strengths: nice interface, quick startup, HDMI output
Weaknesses: Cannot use DVD+RW format (more common than DVD-RW)
Summary: For the most part, I am pleased with the DVD recorder. Unit looks nice and is fuctional. My only gripe would be that it does not compatible with DVD+RW disks.

Strengths: Setup was simple, Very easy to use, sleek design and look
Weaknesses: Only works with DVD-R, so you can't record onto other formats (DVD+R...)
Summary: I bought this DVD recorder to record cooking shows for my wife that were taking up the whole hard drive with our DVR. The setup was very easy and the instructions for recording was very simple to understand. The price was great also. I was looking to upgrade an old DVD player, and I thought the recording functionality didn't add too much to the price, so why not. I have been impressed.

Strengths: Very sleek, thin design, upconverts DVDs to near HD-quality, DVD recorder/player, allows you to hook up your camcorder to record to DVDs, plays DIVX, MP3s!
Weaknesses: Upconverting can only been seen on big TVs, the remote does not have backlit buttons
Summary: I got this player for my father, and it was a great buy! The player allows him to connect a VHS player or any player with S-Video/RCA/firewire inputs and record it to a DVD with a touch of a button! The upconversion is great. When watching it on my 26 inch LCD TV, I cannot tell a difference. But when I used it on my friend's 55 inch plasma, you could see the difference. Not a HUGE difference like HD-DVD or Blu-Ray but good quality. Good buy and it also plays DIVX/XVID to save you time from converting!

Works OK, but ONLY if you don't want to play on other DVD players
Strengths: Easy set-up, operation; automatic chapter creation
Weaknesses: DVDs recorded on this unit WILL NOT play on other DVD players
Summary: I tried four separate recordings to the Samsung-specified DVD-R media, and each yielded the same result: the DVD plays fine ont he Samsung unit, but will not play properly on any other player if you try to fast forward, skip chapters, etc. The playback skips frames and the audio drops out entirely.
I tried to play my Samsung-recorded DVDs on a 5-year-old Panasonic player, a 1-year-old Toshiba player, and my 2-year-old Mac G4 laptop. Same problem each time.
I made several calls to Samsung tech support, but they were dumbfounded, and only suggested I replace the unit. I did. The replacement unit had the same trouble.

I am keeping my VCR
Strengths: compact; reasonably priced
Weaknesses: blurry video on EP record setting
Summary: I bought this DVD recorder hoping to retire my VCR, and to use HDMI connection with my HDTV. The regular SP (2 Hr) recordings are very good, no visible quality loss. However, the video quality at EP (6 Hr) on a DVD is so much blurrier than my VCR's EP recordings on VHS tapes. This really is not ideal if you like to fit many shows on one disc (such as when you are traveling). The up-converted resolutions are only available when using HDMI cable, not component cables. I compared 720p and 1080i through HDMI against 480p through component cables (same movie, same TV), but I actually didn't see much difference. Probably my TV was already doing a good job displaying the lower resolutions. Also, for some reason, my TV does not allow me to change the screen size ratio when I am using this recorder through HDMI cable (but it's fine with components or s-video). The digital connections (HDMI and components) seem a little flimsy too. There have been a few times that these ports are either outputting distorted video or no video at all, and I had to reseat the power cord to get it to work. The remote control takes a little getting used to. It has several buttons you don't normally see on a regular DVD player. It's kinda weird to have a remote with channel buttons but without volume control. Also, there's no 'previous channel' button. One gripe I have about DVD-RW recording (which I think is true with all DVD-RW recorders) is that, you cannot selectively delete shows from the disc to free up space. I was hoping to delete shows I've watched already, save shows that I'd like to watch later, and repeatedly use the newly freed up space over and over. The truth is, you have to format the disc, all or nothing, in order re-use the disc. I guess I need hard-drive-based recording for that. Overall, it has a lot of features for its price and compact size. It doesn't really do anything wrong, but it doesn't offer much edge over old technologies either. It's a 'nice to have, but can live without' kind of purchase.

Samsung HD DVD Recorder
Strengths: Sleek black design and front connections at a reasonable price. HDMI output a positive.
Weaknesses: Difficult to understand directions to record from camcorder to DVD-R only. Does not play on all DVD recorders and remote is difficult to see.
Summary: Not satisfied with product for recording from JVC camcorder to DVD. Instructions for recording where not detailed and requires too many steps to "Finalize". Decided to return product for a Panasonic unit (DMR-ES25S). Good thing I purchased from a retail store online.

Strengths: good picture, nice looking black case-I hate silver paint!
Weaknesses: no VCR+ guide
Summary: This machine is much improved from my old unit a Samsung DVD-HD841, better picture and its black. I also like HDMI vs DVI.
I would have appreciated VCR+, its much quicker to program the local channels.
All in all for $144. its a good value til I buy a reasonally priced HD-R machine.

Strengths: fair price, easy to use
Weaknesses: none...unless you are illiterate.
Summary: I have had no problems with this player/recorder. If you are looking for high-end equipment, continue shopping. If you like the specs listed, and can read a manual, you will have no problems performing the tasks previously listed as issues by other posts. On screen menus are well designed...ie not rocket science. If you are unable to understand this device or just dissatisfied with it, returns may be an option.

Strengths: divx player, easy setup
Weaknesses: only dvd-r/dvd-rw recordable, no subscript for divx play
Summary: nice look, stylish design(my wife love it:)). only complain is that no subscript for divx play since it's not divx ultra. picture quality is great. A slice better than philips dvp5960/37.
