1 Star ReviewLG RC199H - Save your money
Strengths: Product does not perform as advertised
Weaknesses: DVD writers today should be able to record most disc types. This one doesn't
Summary: I bought one of these units and it is horrible. It will not read/use/format blank DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW so it is only good as a DVD player. When you call tech support they will tell you to buy Mitshibusi DVD (only availabe in Australia). Other formats they claim will have 95% failure rates when trying to record. I tried Verbatium, Memorex, Toshiba and they all failed with 90% error rates or more

Save your money, buy anything other than LG, I know I'll never buy an LG product as I feel cheated by the product and slighted by customer service.

1 Star ReviewDon't buy this player!!
Strengths: NONE
Weaknesses: NOT user friendly and definately not reliable.
Summary: This player totally crapped out (won't read any CD's or DVD's)after a year and a half and very little use. LG want's $69.00 to "diagnose" it and God only knows how much the parts will cost! After paying over $200 for the unit and having it quit working, I feel LG should at least repair if at No charge....Not impressed with LG Electronics Corp.

2 Star ReviewStrike 3
Strengths: Picture
Weaknesses: Audio, Customer support, Company practices
Summary: I have never owned a LG product before and will never buy one again. The RC199h obviously has quality control problems. So far, two units have been returned for the same problem with no results. This model has a defect in the audio which will “cut out” during playback for a split second every 3 minutes or so. All connections were checked, alternative digital source was substituted and audio amplifier was troubleshot. The problem is definitely in the units. Strike one.

Customer service, I contacted LG after the second unit proved to be defective, they supply a forum on the LG site to help troubleshoot problems or answer any questions. I explained my on- going problems and waited for a response. 6 days later I got a conformation that my questions had been received but due to the large number of problem correspondence being worked that I would be better to call the trouble line. I believe he said an “Unusually Large Number” (I can believe that) Strike two

Finally, one of the deciding factors in purchasing this unit was the $30 rebate that was offered on the LG site for the RC199h. The rebate form was downloaded; instructions were followed and returned promptly. 32 days later a form letter was received stating that “The retailer you purchased from does not qualify for this rebate” This was offered as a factory rebate and no mention of where purchased from was annotated on the rebate form. When returning back to the LG site today the first thing I noticed was that the entire rebate section on the site has now been removed. Company practices, Strike Three.

If you were fortunate enough to receive a flawless RC199h, congratulations. Keep your fingers crossed and hope you’ll never need to deal with the company.

Strengths: *Upconverts all video (TV, DVD, VHS and AUX inputs) to progressive scan, and upconverts all audio to optical digital. *Crystal clear picture output.
Weaknesses: When the power is turned on, it takes about 10 seconds to boot up, and when a DVD is inserted, it takes about 10 seconds to read the DVD before it will play it.
Summary: I've owned my LG RC-199H for over two months, and I've never had a problem with reading or burning DVD+R disks, or with audio cutting out. In fact, I've been extremely pleased with mine. Sure it does take a moment to read disks, and to "boot up", but I'm not complaining. Maybe one other thing I wish they could change is when watching TV in 720P or 1080I form, the screen is stretched out to the widescreen shape, and I wish I could squeeze the image into the 4:3 aspect, but there's no setting for that. That's not a big deal to me because the 480i and 480P settings don't have that problem.

I don't believe there's a better machine available than this one for under $300.

Strengths: 1080I output, great picture
Weaknesses: none yet
Summary: i have had the lg rc199h for 2 weeks and love it. i was surprized the way the upvert to 1080i made regular dvds look great on my sony bravia 40'' lcd. some of my old vhs tapes when copied to dvd and then played at 1080i looked better than the originals. i have had no issues with formating dvds.

i am happy that i returned the panasonic (non-hdmi) unit i bought first because upvert is the way to go. until the new hd dvds get firmly standardized this is the best bang for the buck.

1 Star ReviewDoes not work with Samsung TVs
Strengths: All the features you want
Weaknesses: Does not work with Samsung TVs
Summary: Bought this unit last night. I had problems getting to work with my Samsung high def DLP unit. Called tech support - tried a few things and then the tech rep asked if I have a Samsung TV. Of course I do. He proceeded to say that the upconversion does not work with Samsung units. Therefore this unit is useless to me.

Why couldn't they advertise this. Instead I wasted 4 hours of my day with this thing.

1 Star Reviewmega junk
Strengths: good audio/video when working
Weaknesses: extreme quality control issues
Summary: This is my second unit, both were refurbs. The first unit would not recognize any dvd after only two months. Had to threaten to sue the e-bay dealer to get a replacement. Now the replacement makes a horrible noise when started, and has to be restarted several times to get the noise to stop. I'm sure it is on its way to the trash bin.

1 Star ReviewJUNK!
Strengths: Great features and specs
Weaknesses: Doesn't work for long
Summary: While it worked it was great, but just before the warranty expired it started having an occasional "hiccup". I made the mistake of ignoring those few times that I had to insert the disk twice before it would start playing it or the time the DVD drawer would not open. Finally, the week after the warranty expired the unit would not recognize any disk.

1 Star ReviewLG RC 199H Put it on your don't buy list ever. JUNK
Strengths: none
Weaknesses: Poor quality DVD Recorder
Summary: I bought this DVD recorder a little over a year ago (of course the warranty ran out) from Best Buy. I used it only to play DVD's. Over the entire year I probably used it 15 times to play movies. Then the player would not read discs until you reloaded the disc about 10 times. Finally it would not read the discs at all. I tried everything in the trouble shooting section of the manual but had no luck. If you look on E Bay there are about 15 RC 199H models that had the same problem. Quality control is bad. LG should change the name to NG for NO GOOD. No more LG for me.
