Strengths: 1. Automatically installed itself in Windows XP.
2. Adds versatility to older laptop by adding USB 2.0 and Firewire
3. Worked perfectly with all tested USB devices
2.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I purchased this to go with my 5-year-old Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. Although my well-traveled laptop has two USB ports, they are both Version 1.1. I had to replace these USB ports once while the laptop was still under warranty so I worry about what I would do if the original USB ports failed again. So, this cardbus fulfills two objectives:
1. Provides faster USB 2.0 ports for my USB 1.1 variety laptop.
2. Provides insurance in case something ever happens to the older USB ports that are installed on the laptop.
Installation of the Adaptek duoconnect was a breeze. After the Windows XP had booted, I simply plugged the Adaptek into the cardbus port. Windows XP immediately recognized it and installed all the necessary drivers automatically. Without any intervention on my part, the Adaptek was quickly ready to use.
To test the Adaptek USB 2.0 ports, I attached a temperamental external hard drive enclosure (with a 40 GB hard drive installed). This enclosure works most of the time, but not all of the time with my primary desktop computer. When I connected it to the Adaptek USB 2.0 ports, the laptop immediately recognized it and installed the proper drivers. I then copied a couple gigabytes of data from the external hard drive and it worked FAST. The USB 2.0 port worked perfectly!
I also tested the USB 2.0 ports by plugging in a Kingston 1 GB USB 2.0 thumbdrive. Once again, Windows XP immediately recognized the new device and automatically prepared it for my use. By the way, it's very satisfying to plug the Kingston 1 GB into the USB 1.1 ports and have Windows XP list available "Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports" where the "USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port."
I do not have the capability to test the firewire ports.
