Strengths: Small, easy install, and easy to use.
Weaknesses: none
Summary: I love this card. My laptop doesn't have enough USB slots, and doesn't have any Firewire ports. But using this card, I have everything I need. Both the USB 2.0 and Firewire interfaces are plenty quick, even for my external DVD±RW burner (Firewire) and my external hard drive (USB 2.0). Though there may be slightly less consistent dataflow with the USB 2.0 slots, this is normal when comparing to the steady flow of Firewire technology. The card is durable enough, which is necessary when a card has to stick out on the side of your laptop. And I got it for a great deal after rebates.

Strengths: Good price after rebate, Nice upgrade for legacy laptops, No drivers needed for XP
Weaknesses: none
Summary: This card was available for free after rebate so it was a great value. It lets you add both USB and Firewire ports to older laptops. If you are using Windows XP, you don't even need any drivers.

Strengths: High speed USB, Firewire ports; plug and play...
Weaknesses: Bulky externally
Summary: This is a great card for folks who want to breathe a little extra life into their older notebook. While I wouldn't necessarily recommend adding it to an older notebook and then trying to do video capture/edit using the firewire ports, it works great to speed up data transfers to USB 2.0/Firewire devices and video streaming for webcam applications.

It's also a reliable way to add ports (many of the older computers have USB 1.1 and no Firewire).

It might have been a better idea (but more expensive) to do a dongle for the connections so you could leave the card in the notebook and just connect the dongle when you wanted to use the ports. However, the card is solid enough that if you have a back slightly wider than your notebook you can relatively safely leave the card in all the time.

I have had no problems with it to date.

Strengths: USB and Firewire in one device, easy to confingure and work instantly
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This card is easy to setup and working instantly. Works out of the box with Ubuntu Linux 6.10. Kernel is 2.6.17. I don't have to compile anything. It is OHCI compliant for the firewire port. The USB uses the EHCI module. It frees up a PCMCIA slot for other card.

Strengths: 1. Automatically installed itself in Windows XP. 2. Adds versatility to older laptop by adding USB 2.0 and Firewire 3. Worked perfectly with all tested USB devices 2.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: I purchased this to go with my 5-year-old Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop. Although my well-traveled laptop has two USB ports, they are both Version 1.1. I had to replace these USB ports once while the laptop was still under warranty so I worry about what I would do if the original USB ports failed again. So, this cardbus fulfills two objectives:

1. Provides faster USB 2.0 ports for my USB 1.1 variety laptop.

2. Provides insurance in case something ever happens to the older USB ports that are installed on the laptop.

Installation of the Adaptek duoconnect was a breeze. After the Windows XP had booted, I simply plugged the Adaptek into the cardbus port. Windows XP immediately recognized it and installed all the necessary drivers automatically. Without any intervention on my part, the Adaptek was quickly ready to use.

To test the Adaptek USB 2.0 ports, I attached a temperamental external hard drive enclosure (with a 40 GB hard drive installed). This enclosure works most of the time, but not all of the time with my primary desktop computer. When I connected it to the Adaptek USB 2.0 ports, the laptop immediately recognized it and installed the proper drivers. I then copied a couple gigabytes of data from the external hard drive and it worked FAST. The USB 2.0 port worked perfectly!

I also tested the USB 2.0 ports by plugging in a Kingston 1 GB USB 2.0 thumbdrive. Once again, Windows XP immediately recognized the new device and automatically prepared it for my use. By the way, it's very satisfying to plug the Kingston 1 GB into the USB 1.1 ports and have Windows XP list available "Hi-Speed USB 2.0 ports" where the "USB device can perform faster if you connect it to a Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port."

I do not have the capability to test the firewire ports.

Strengths: USB and Firewire in one body.
Weaknesses: Little bit bulky. Power adapter is not included. (But in general, you don't need it at all)
Summary: I am using Thinkpad T42 laptop having only two USB ports. So, I was considering USB hub at first. But what I needed was just one or two more USB ports and one or more 1394 ports if I could have. So, when I found this product, I changed my mind. With this card, I can use PCMCIA slot that I really don’t use at all, and I can still use two USB ports on my laptop.

If you are using Windows XP, you don’t need to install any program from provided CD.

The only problem with this card is its size. With its two vertical USB ports, it’s not slim at all and a little bit bulky. If you are looking for slim one, you’d better consider other Adaptec product with USB ports only or 1394 ports only.

Strengths: has both USB and firewire, easy to use
Weaknesses: some devices can't work properly through it
Summary: I bought it to get more ports for my Dell i8600. Installation was very easy. Just insert it into the PCIMA slot and the laptop recognized it automatically and ready for use in a minute. It has two USB ports, one 6 pin firewire and one 4 pin firewire port. It works good. But when I connected my GPS unit (mio c310) through the USB port, the PC could not recognize it. I then used the USB port from the PC itself, it's fine. I don't know it's just a problem for all the USB hub or just this card. Other than that, I like it very much.
