3 Star ReviewHD Radio at a reasonable price
Strengths: HD radio (CD-quality radio transmissions), good price, supports HD2 (sideband) stations, nice button layout, well lit. No subscription fee! (unlike XM / Sirrus)
Weaknesses: HD radio signal can be annoying when in low reception areas, questionable regular FM reception
Summary: If you want to try HD radio at a reasonable price, this is the unit for you. In general I like the radio, and the HD is really nice when you happen to have a steady, strong station. But there are times when it does not work so well...

I have over a dozen HD radio stations in my area, but found I am on the fringe of the reception area for some of them. Even so, as you drive around, sometimes you go through areas where the signal is weaker. When the radio cannot maintain the HD signal, it drops back to regular FM. The problem is that the regular FM signal may be out of sync with the HD signal, from milliseconds up to 10 seconds. The effect of this is that when it switches back and forth between HD FM, it can sound like a brief echo or reverberation, or it can be way out of sync so the music (or talk) repeats many seconds in the past or future. The same thing happens when it acquires the HD signal again. It can drive you nuts after a while.

Also I'm not sure the regular FM reception is so great on this unit. FM stations which should be strong seem to have more noise than they should. May be a design issue?

Strengths: HD radio, MP3/WMA capability, iPod capability
Weaknesses: Radio interface, must buy external connector for iPod
Summary: My Acura TL already had a quality head unit from the factory, so this upgrade was more about features than sound quality. The JVC does sound very good, but I'm not sure I can tell the night and day HD radio difference that others talk about.

I really enjoy the extra (HD2) stations that are now available to me. They have pretty much commercial-free music with slightly varied formats from their HD1 counterparts. I also like the MP3/WMA capabilities and aux in connection (for outboard MP3 player).

The rating goes down one notch because the radio's interface takes a little getting used to. Specifically, you can't tune directly to an HD2 station; you must first go to the HD1 counterpart, then select the HD2 station with a button push. It could also use a better display for station/song info since the segmented LED has to scroll the information, but a nice LCD would've added more $$$ to the bargain price.

Strengths: Sound clarity, High Definition sounds amazing!! It is CD quality. Some FM broadcast channels offer hidden HD channels; an unexpected bonus.
Weaknesses: none found yet
Summary: Multiple presets, looks great in my SUV. It was easy to install, came prewired for amp and multiple speakers (I have 8) has connections for my iPod too! Couldn't ask for more, especially for the price. I'm jammin' now!

Strengths: Sound, power, built in preset equalizer sounds.
Weaknesses: FM reception is not as strong as my old factory stereo on my 2000 Toyota Tundra... only drawback.. JVC usually has good reception too, so I was a little disappointed...
Summary: For the price, this stereo has nice features! I have yet to take advantage of adding or trying the option for it. It is Satellite radio ready, iPod ready, CD Changer ready, but you will need an optional attachment which requires an additional purchase to hook those up. I installed it my self and it was very easy after I found out I had to take the factory amp out as well as the stereo. I had thought the cabling for the stereo did not match. You will need a pocket and a cabling harness for Toyota 2000 Tundra Truck console, if that is what you own. This unit has a nice remote and the CD's that I burned sound exceptional over what it sound like on my factory CD player...

Strengths: Good reception, lots of presets, nice price with a HD Tuner built in.
Weaknesses: Not a lot of built in power.
Summary: I just installed this deck in my work van, and was astounded by the reception. I was pulling in stations from over 75 miles away. I'm not sure how much that has to do with the HD yet, but as I drive around more I'll find out. Not a lot of power in this deck though (20w/Ch)

so if I had put this in a car I definitely would have an amp, but overall, a great deck for price!

3 Star ReviewKD-HDR1 Headunit
Strengths: Clear, Crisp, Sound. Easy controls.
Weaknesses: I am in Central NJ and the HD signal seems to keep going in and out, could just be my location. Subwoofer control is on the weak side. I was able to make it much louder with my pioneer headunit.
Summary: Not a bad unit. Considering the deal that I got it for...around $100 with trade in of my old unit, its a good deal. I would not pay more than that. Very simple controls, good for your basic upgrade. Custom options are not that great. Sound range for the mid-high is pretty crisp and clear. Would not get this unit if you are into a lot of bass and do not have separate amps and subwoofers. HD is a neat feature when it works...

Strengths: HD Tuner, nice display, handy & usable remote, quick CD load time
Weaknesses: small buttons, clock does not display while radio is off
Summary: The stereo provides good reception and is the best deal around if you want HD radio. The power is fair, but I am going to need an amp to drive the speakers in my large SUV. I'm a little disappointed that the stereo has not displayed text information about the song/artist on the radio; this isn't even an HD function, but I haven't seen it on the first radio station. I am in south eastern Virginia, and I'm only picking up a handful of the HD radio stations that are supposedly available - not sure why. I guess HD radio is still in it's infancy and most people don't even know about it. This radio has the ability to receive multicasts from the same HD radio station - most of which are commercial free; but I have still not found an HD radio station that offers this. Despite all that, it is a good radio, clear instructions, easy to install, and I like the fact that you can put in a CD without waiting for the faceplate to open up. Less moving parts is always better.

Strengths: Cost, HD Reception, Surround Sound Feature
Weaknesses: No easy way to adjust sound settings without creating your own equalizer setting.
Summary: The fact that JVC is putting out a CD deck that has a built-in tuner for less than $200 is incredible. As of today, it's the way to go to get a cost effective HD unit. I live in Galveston, TX (50 mi. south of Houston) and I get 33 HD stations, they are AWESOME! HD reception can go out in some spots, but overall so far the radio is great. The Surround sound feature they've built in is fantastic, it takes your 4 speakers and turns them into a smooth warm sounding masterpiece. The only catch is that it is hard to adjust the individual frequencies of treble, bass, and mids because you have to configure a user modified equalizer setting, there is no easy way to simply manipulate the settings.

Overall, you can't complain because for $199.99 or less depending where you buy, you get an HD radio before all your buddies and the sound out of this unit is just fantastic.

P.S. It has front, rear, and sub pre-outs, Sirius and XM ready (addl equip necessary), it can also support and iPod adapter (addl equip necessary) for direct iPod control.

1 Star ReviewJVC KDHDR1
Strengths: Good HD sound quality. Many presets.
Weaknesses: AM section has very poor reception.
Summary: I have already taken the unit to repair center. Reinstalled it and I still have very poor AM reception. The rest of the unit is OK, but there are some programs in the AM band that I would like to receive.

Strengths: HD radio, aux input, crisp sound and multiple seting for front, rear and sub speakers. Also comes with good EQ.
Weaknesses: Doesn't look so hot.
Summary: I was so happy with this product I purchased another a month later. This deck is excellent with any system. You can tweak it to accommodate what your working with. This deck is better that ones costing twice as much.

Strengths: Great sound for the price! Packed with features!
Weaknesses: User Interface is not intuitive
Summary: Great sound, and the lowest priced HD radio on the market! Also plays CDs and CDs with MP3s or WMAs! Most other companies require two components to get the HD radio and the CD player, this company does it in one as the HD receiver is built in! Note: Many stereos say "HD radio ready", which means you still have to buy the receiver which is sold seperately. This unit has the receiver built in, and the whole thing takes only one slot in my dash! Also looks great in my car! My only complaint is that the controls are little hard to use, but this is only because it is packed with features and has a minimal amount of buttons. Highly recommended!!

3 Star ReviewThis player is really good, but some kinks
Strengths: Best value to price ratio, if you want a HD radio with MP3. And its spec is very impressive, better than Pioneer, Panasonic, and on par with Alpine.
Weaknesses: won't remember your own equalizer setup everytime you cycle through the settings. Remote is missing features.
Summary: 2007-07-31 05:20:33 I did my comparison shopping and found this deal too good to pass on. The HD radio works quite well and really sounds like CD quality. I have so far gather more than 14 FM stations with HD radio in the SF Bay area, and they really sounds like CD quality. I figure I would just burn my mp3 on my CDRW, and when I am tired of listen to it, i just listen to HD radio. It has no problem reading my CDRW or CDR disk, and it renders the music just beautifully, which is evident by its above 102 signal-to-noise ratio and cd frequency response is very sharp. with my active crossover and amplifier, it sounds very good.
