Strengths: An inexpensive (under $100) and effective means to convert LP records into digital format. Built-in preamplifier permits direct connection to computer. Setup so easy that even a cave man can do it.
Weaknesses: Pyro5 software is disappointing. Turntable lacks USB interface. Stylus cleaning brush and disc cleaning solution not provided.
Summary: Turntable fine, but Pyro5: what a disappointment! Sound can’t be monitored during recording with Pyro5, and the operator must be present to stop recording manually when digitization has been completed. Tracks must be separated manually. The track cleanup feature removes clicks and scratches but at the same time affects the musical performance adversely. The resulting edited digital recording lacks much of the sparkle of the original. I use other audio-editing software to clean up the tracks and to separate individual tracks from one another, thereby minimizing my exposure to Pyro5.
An alternative approach would be to purchase the Audio Technica AT-PL50 turntable alone, since it does a fine job. The resulting savings can be applied to purchase other, readily available audio-editing shareware that almost certainly will perform better than Pyro5.
My AT-PL50 turntable is placed on a solid base in vibration-free surroundings. As a result, although the AT-PL50 turntable arm is very light, I have not experienced “skipping” problems while recording.
Overall 4-stars; if the manufacturer were to provide better software, I would raise my rating to 5-stars.
