Coby DVD-R1280 w/80GB HDD
Strengths: Great Price, good entry-level HDD recorder.
Easy to Program, much like a VCR.
Multiple quality selections (HQ, EP, SP, SLP, etc) help to manage HDD space.
DV input.
Weaknesses: More like a VCR with "timed record" functions than a TIVO with multiple view/record/titling functionality.
SLOW dubbing from HDD to DVD.
Takes only +R or +RW media.
Summary: 2007-02-08 08:32:26 I work for a church and bought this about a month ago just to record our weekly satellite seminars. Instead of programming & recording each session individually to VHS, this machine allows me to program up to 8 recordings at a time directly to its built-in hard drive.
Of course, then I have to wait for it to dub to DVD... (Which, for my last 2-hour recording, took around 15 minutes) Note, when you've programmed a "timed record," the unit must be OFF to actually begin recording. So, unlike a TIVO, you cannot use the built-in tuner while recording.
A nice feature would be firewire output so I can dump to my CPU and edit before recording to DVD. But then that's why they invented TV Tuner cards...
