Strengths: Great feature set, affordable. Audio and video are very good.
Weaknesses: Remote is a bit flimsy, no open/close button on remote, disk tray seems very fragile.
Summary: I bought the DVP-5140 to take over for my Playstation 2, so I was mainly looking for a solid player with a good amount of features, but nothing too amazing. Using it with a 27in flat panel CRT, I've been very happy with the picture quality. Sound is also very nice, although I've only tested it with a 2.0 speaker setup. Be aware that this player is missing both S-video and optical audio inputs, so connection choices are limited to composite or component video, and analog or coaxial audio. Overall the 5140 makes an excellent entry-level player and is also inexpensive enough for anyone in need of a player and waiting to see how the new high-def DVD players turn out.

Strengths: Plays everything, low profiles, low price
Weaknesses: It is not HD upconvertible; No decoder for DTS (Digital Theater Sound).
Summary: My first impression of opening package was that the DVP5140 is so small and compact. It is just a little over 1" thick and 10" deep.

My second impression about the player is that it plays everything, including CD-R/W, DivX, DVD, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W DVD-Video, MP3, MPEG4, Picture CDs, VCD, and SVCD. I have yet to find the format it won't play. Just copy video files, such as Divx or Window Media Files, into a DVD disk, then inserted into the DVD player, it will play! It is that simple.

It is not HD upconvertible, a function that allows you to watch DVD's in an HDTV signal rather than an EDTV one. Nothing is perfect. My recommendation is to use the player until the price of HD-DVD players become affordable.

Strengths: Great dvdplayer, basically, plays everything I throw in it. OK price.
Weaknesses: remot control does not have a button for open and close tray, can not play HDrip files
Summary: really good dvd and dvdrip player. It plays most of the disks (vcd, dvd, svcd, dvdrip) I throw in. pictures are good, better than dvp640. remote control looks cool, like it a lot. However I don't like the black faceplate of the dvd player with its silver body look.

Strengths: Nice slim design. PLays all dvds. nice upgrade from previous model dvp 6421. Very affordable.
Weaknesses: No S-video, no optical audio output.
Summary: I got this player for $30. The features below say it all. This is a great player for an someone who doesn't need s- video. The remote is ok fo rthe price. Position of buttons awkward from my sony player but at least this will play everything I put in unlike the Sony I paid $200 for 2yrs ago. I definitely recommend this for the price. Lots of bang for a little money. Great for extra room kids room , etc.

Strengths: NA
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: Pros:

First, it supports both NTSC and PAL. Why is it important? Because you can simply make it region-free with the remote. Now you can enjoy any European PAL movies after making the region free. Just google it to see how to do it.

Second, it reads almost every media type and format. It reads DVD+R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, CD-R/RW and supports DVD Video, Video CD, SVCD, DivX, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, DivX 3.11, DivX 4, DivX 5, DivX 6, DivX Ultra, MP3, WMA, Picture CD, JPEG. So far I have tested .avi, .mpg. on CD-R and DVD-R/+R and all of them worked perfect…

Cons:

But movies make some pauses from time to time on CD-RW and DVD-RW/+RW.

Also, the player does not play .asf and .wmv file formats. If you want to play them you have to convert the files to .avi or .mpg in your pc.

The remote is a little confusing, because the interface is a little bit different from conventional one, but you will get used to it soon. The remote not that sensitive, but I am not sure it is because the included batteries are already drained.

Many people already know that this player does not support DTS. If you are a DTS fan, it is not the right one. But I have heard that normal ears can not easily tell between DTS and DD. If you are not that sensitive person, it is still OK. However, if you have DTS decoding receiver or amplifier and the dvd player is connected with coaxial cable, then you can enjoy DTS.

When you turn it on, it takes too long for loading. I have owned Sony, two Toshibas and this. This one has the laziest loading.

One last thing is on the back there is no S-video output. Well, if you have HD TV, then component video output is the best among three, which are composite, S-video, and component and 5140 has component output. So if your TV has component input, then no S-video does not bother you. My tv, unfortunately, does not have component input.

Conclusion:

Even though there are some cons, considering the price is around $50~$60, I would say this is the best buy as an entry level dvd player.

Strengths: Plays all my various DVD formats, attractive and slim, easily region-free, great for the price, very good audio quality.
Weaknesses: Some see lack of S-video as a weakness, but component cables are a better choice, anyway.
Summary: Having good experiences with the DVP-642, I'm glad I read reviews of the 5140 highlighting its upgrades & improvements, which resulted in me recommending it for a family member. After seeing it work in person, I purchased one for myself. Navigation is, indeed, much improved on DivX movies, and the improved picture quality is noticeable (I use component cables). It's simple to make region free, and plays all DVD formats I've thrown at it. I also use it as a CD player(saves space), and it sounds better than the old HK player it replaced(now for sale). I think I'm with the majority who are waiting for HDTV & Blueray to sort out and become more affordable, so this will definitely hold me until then, while being much more versatile.

For < $50, I'm very impressed with it and would buy another.

Strengths: Plays NTSC and PAL DVDs; Can be made region-free; multi-format capability; stylish look
Weaknesses: None
Summary: This DVD player is a nice upgrade from Philips' previous model, DVP-642. Picture quality is improved, and this new model is "DivX Ultra certified", meaning you can play movies encoded with DivX 6. Menu navigation and subtitles are now possible with DivX 6, so it's like playing regular DVD movies with much less file size.

Strengths: Plays all discs without problem. Very quiet. Looks nice too!
Weaknesses: No S-video, no optical audio output. May not be a problem if you don't need these.
Summary: Very versatile. Plays all formats that exist (I may exaggerate a little). I have DVP-642 and that one works pretty good as well. I am not sure about the reliability of this player. The 642 seems a little troublesome.
