Strengths: 24P, cine-gamma, pro audio inputs, It's lightweight, compact, and packed with features. The image quality is the best I've seen in a prosumer model. Simply awesome.
Weaknesses: I cannot think of any yet. It's been amazing so far.
Summary: This camera has everything I need. I could go on and on. I'm truly impressed with what Panasonic has been able to put into this camera. And they've really listened to what the users want. Slow shutter speeds have been added to the 'A' model, and a few new cine-gamma settings. This camera really gives you the freedom to create the looks you want, and with rue 24 progressive frames per second, you get the ultimate cinema-look and feel. I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for the best Standard Def camera in this class with the most options.

Strengths: Auto White Balance button to make color corrections easy. Light weight camera...great for field work. Huge viewfinder and LCD. Phantom powered mic inputs. One step tape closing mechanism
Weaknesses: No auto level setting for sound.
Summary: Own both the Canon XL2 and this one. I prefer the Panasonic because it's much easier to carry vs. the Canon. The XL2 doesn't even have a LCD screen. Where the Canon shines are the AutoLevels for sound and a really slow zoom control. I wished the DVX100A's had these two features, then I wouldn't even pick up the XL2 (especially since it's unbalanced and bulky.)

Strengths: Outstanding picture quality. 24P Advanced creates a great "film like" image. Price. I paid about $2,650 after the $300 rebate.
Weaknesses: No true 16:9, but the 100a's "squeeze" image is acceptable for most purposes.
Summary: I agonized for almost 3 months on whether to replace my beloved Canon XL1s with the XL2 or the Panasonic 100a. I think I made the right decision. This camera is amazing. Sure, it doesn't do true 16:9 and it doesn't have the "cool factor" of the XL2. But guess what? If you plan on doing a lot of outdoor shooting you'll be glad you got the Panni. When I would shoot on location with the XL1s I would constantly get asked for permits or asked what I was filming by paranoid law enforcement or property owners.

As far as I can tell, the only real advantage the XL2 has is 16:9 and interchangeable lenses. For the type of filming I do I couldn't justify spending an additional $1,400 for those features. For the price of the Canon you can go out and get one of the new Sony HD camcorders.

At about $3,650 after rebates you are not going to find a better camera anywhere. You should be aware that to get the best results you are going to have to spend a lot of time understanding all of the various settings that this camera has. Don't expect to get the best results using the full automatic setting. Be patent and you will achieve superior results.
