Strengths: Great sound. Nice look for the speakers.
Weaknesses: Not a lot of inputs. Wires are attached to the speakers (and relatively short). Not a great design for the remote control.
Summary: Overall this is a nice system. It looks good, it sounds good, and works for the price you pay for it. I got it on sale during BF and can't say I expected much more for the price I paid.

The speakers are attached to the wires which makes long length runs kind of a pain. Even running the rear speakers to the back of my room served to be a challenge.

The inputs are there, however, you basically can only hook up two devices. You have the option of either a digital connection for a device or an analog. Instead of having 4 separate device options (2 digital and 2 analog) u get 2 total (2 digital or 2 analog).

The remote is kind of a crappy design too. It seems as if it were more designed with other components in mind than this main HT system.

Anyways... this is a nice low end sound system and I am generally pleased with it. For the price I paid, I'd definitely buy it again.

Strengths: Easy to setup, good sound
Weaknesses: Non-Powered Sub (but still good sound)
Summary: I use this in a small living room and I found the sound to be great. The room is mostly square so I can't day about an odd sized room. So far its been great, I use for TV and DVD's and have been more then happy with both. Overall a great buy for the $$

Strengths: Easy to setup. Good sound. Relatively small/compact. Looks nice.
Weaknesses: Speakers use cheap hard-wired wire. Loud but maybe not enough power for some rooms. Sub rather small and non-powered. Few options of surround modes.
Summary: I use for bedroom setup and its a good product for the price.

Note, this does NOT include a DVD player.

I also use the wireless surround speakers, also easy to setup with decent sound, but sometimes cuts out and/or hisses.

Overall good value for the price.

Strengths: Price; 2 optical inputs; lots of choices for customizing the sound using Panasonic's SFC (Sound Field Control).
Weaknesses: Weak tuner; only 2 of 3 digital sound inputs can be activated at once.
Summary: This system is a decent value for a relatively small room (12' x 12'). I have it connected to a Samsung 32" LCD HDTV and an RCA upconvert DVD using the 2 optical digital inputs. (The TV doesn't seem to pass through the 5.1 sound from the DVD even though I'm using an HDMI cable between the two.) There is also a coaxial digital input, but to use it you have to deactivate (using the menu system) one of the optical inputs. This isn't important to me because I don't have a 3rd digital device (like an xbox). The FM tuner is serviceable, AM typical of AM -- not much. (I'm using the supplied single-wire FM and loop AM antennas and could probably do better, although it's in a second-floor room within 10 miles of most transmitters.) My main reason for buying such a system was to improve the sound of my HDTV/DVD, and it serves that purpose well. I'm generally interested in only 2 FM stations and I've managed to get them with the wire antenna.

The menu system, or perhaps it's the instructions for using it, is somewhat confusing. Most things can be controlled by the remote, but there are a few, like inputting favorite-channel radio frequencies, which must be done by a confusing series of button pushes on the console. Of course once done, you probably won't go back to this. (There is also an auto-scan system for up to 30 channels, but as I said, I'm interested in only 2 so chose the manual method.)

The remote controls only Panasonic sources (TV, DVD, etc).

3 Star ReviewPanasonic SC-HT40
Strengths: Good Sound, Price, Small & Easy to setup
Weaknesses: Weak tuner, Surround On/Off cannot be controlled thru remote. Speakers use hard-wired wire.
Summary: Though the Sub-Woofer is not powered still the BASS is good. Instruction manual is very confusing. Since the Speakers use hard-wired wire it is not possible to replace the wires with a good one.

I've also purchased the PAN SHFX60 Panasonic Rear Wireless Transmitter which saves me from running wire to the back of my room for complete surround sound. The Wireless Transmitter is little expensive priced at $150.

Overall good buy for a small room.

Strengths: Inexpensive but good sounds; Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS; Wireless rear speakers with an optional SH-FX60 Digital Trasmitter & Receiver;
Weaknesses: Awkward to program optical inputs; Only two of the three digital inputs can be used at one time
Summary: SC-HT40 Theatre System DOES NOT include a CD/DVD player. It's just a receiver/tuner with 5.1 speakers (5 speakers and 1 sub-woofer). It's fitting for those who already own DVD players with optical and/or coaxial outputs to enjoy the full surround sound. It provides 3 audio decodings--Dolby Digital, Dolby Pro Logic II, and DTS, a feature seldom found in home theatre systems of this price range. Setting up the whole system is easy. I purchased an optional SH-FX60 Digital Transmitter & Receiver so I didn't have to run wires to the rear speakers. The receiver/tuner has three digital inputs (two optical and one coaxial). But you can use only two of them at one time. A manual is often confusing. For those who're looking for an inexpensive 5.1 speaker home theatre system with a tuner/receiver that gives good sounds, this is definitely a good buy.

1 Star ReviewMisinformation
Strengths: Great sound system for the price.
Weaknesses: For the system itself, there are none I can find. The main weakness is that this site advertised it as coming with a DVD/CD player and it doesn't. Whats the deal?
Summary: I ordered this system with complete confidence in pricegrabber. I've ordered multiple things from it in the past, and it has never done wrong. It is frustrating that after carefully checking the included components for a system with a DVD player (which this site say that this system has) it doesn't actually come with a player. I supposed after looking at the picture, one could've guessed, but I put faith in the product information provided. If you are looking at this system, be warned that it does NOT come with a DVD player. If you're using this site, be careful and double check the product info from now on.

Strengths: Compact sized speakers, nice sound quality, reasonably priced, Panasonic reliablity and quality
Weaknesses: No video inputs, only 2 optical inputs, menu for FM tuner setup not very intuitive, can't use the remote to turn on "Music Surround" option (but can use it to turn it off)
Summary: I purchased this home theater package for use in a bedroom and it is perfect for this. The compact size of the speakers keeps it from looking too obtrusive. Although the speakers are very small, they still offer very good sound quality. Also, the system has plenty of power for the average listener. One thing to note is that it does not include a DVD player, but for me that was a benefit. Why spend more money for another SD DVD player, when Blu-Ray and HD DVD players are now available. I definitely recommend this as an inexpensive option to get a high quality home theater system.

Strengths: Good sound for the price. Easy to install. Digital and optical inputs.
Weaknesses: Only two sources can be connected so not great for gamers unless they want to deal with a toggle switch. Not great sound but what do you expect for $175
Summary: Overall a good value. I have purchased the rear speaker transmitter which is a bit pricey but will keep the living room looking nice. I would definitely recommend this unit as a great starter system for small rooms or the budget conscious.

1 Star ReviewPanasonic SC-HT40
Strengths: Great price
Weaknesses: Poor durability
Summary: I purchased the system about a year ago. Recently it began making popping noises through the speakers when the receiver was turned on. Yesterday it made a popping noise, displayed an "Overload" condition and shut down. I am disappointed in this Panasonic product.
