2 Star ReviewVery basic unit
Strengths: Can read any type of media
Weaknesses: Only writes to DVD-RW/R. Output not compatible with most other players
Summary: 2006-07-20 05:31:57 This is a very basic unit. It can replace a basic VCR but don't expect anything fancy. First, it will only write to DVD-R media. These are supposedly the most compatible media but I found the output to have compatibility problems. My other DVD player by SONY has trouble reading these recordings. Sometimes it reads portions of a disk other times not. Get weird error messages as well.

Trying to play the disks on my desktop computer is a challenge as well. The recordings always stutter a bit before they start playing. My computer has lots of extra processing and video power so it is not a problem with my hardware.

Although I do not have a lot of experience with recorders like this, I find the finalizing part at the end extremely slow. A Panasonic recorder I have used finalized the disks in less than a minute whereas this machine takes up to 5 minutes to do it.

Output quality is good. Better than a VCR but not nearly as good as the DVR. All in all, it would be a good unit if the disks it produced were playable elsewhere. Because of the compatibility problem, I eventually replaced it with a Sony unit which has better quality output and whose disks are compatible.

3 Star ReviewDecent DVD recorder from big namebrand
Strengths: Easy setup, good TV reception, read all type discs
Weaknesses: Only write DVD-R/RW discs, Finalized disc may not work on other DVD players
Summary: This DVD recorder is for recording TV shows or backup movies from another DVD player/VCR. The quality and built are excellent. Setup is easy and within only a few minutes, Done! Ultra-slim design makes it available for space saving, however it does not look like a cheap DVD player/recorder. Front-panel DV (IEEE 1394) input makes it convenient for recording from a camcorder. The image quality from recorded discs is great. The unit only writes on DVD-R/RW discs, it’s ok with me. The only problem is the finalized discs may not work on some DVD players.

3 Star ReviewA decent DVD for basic use
Strengths: Built in Tuner to burn DVD's
Weaknesses: Weak signal tuner, pictures do not come that sharp. Standard Definision cannot record HD, no upconversion.
Summary: This player is just ok, it does not have any special features. For a basic unit with a burner though it is just fine. It has a built in tuner, just becareful as in Feb 2009 it will have to go to a digital signal. The unit is perfect for a spare room.

1 Star ReviewUnhappy with the unit and Samsung
Strengths: Small size.
Weaknesses: Worked marginally when new and consistently got worse.
Summary: I bought this unit six months ago. When new it was particular about what rental DVD's it would work with and they had to be perfectly clean, often it took three or four times trying to get a movie to load. About a month ago it got where it would only work with about half the movies we rented. I called Samsung and they gave me a repair order number and a phone number to schedule the repair. The repair work is outsourced to a company that doesn't answer their phones or return messages. I called Samsung back and they said I had to send it in to this company with $30 to get it repaired and wouldn't I rather just pay to get it fixed locally. As far as I am concerned that is not a warranty.
