Strengths: Ipod connection, cd/mp3 playback quality, overall quality.
Weaknesses: Price is a bit high
Summary: When i first got this unit, I was floored by the build quality. The ipod connection, as I had heard, is the best there is. Other manufacturers offer ipod connections, but the don't come close to Alpine's "Full-speed" connection. I am a big ipod user, and it was important that I had a quick, snappy connection. This unit is not like other companies' offerings, which force you to wait several seconds before changing songs, etc.

The cd/mp3/terrestrial radio quality is excellent also. Because of this stereo, I plan on improving my setup by purchasing speakers for my car.

Alpine is generally considered the best, or at least in the top two/three of all car stereo manufacturers. It's a littly pricey, but you do get what you pay for!

Strengths: Ipod controls, Biolite display, MP3 support, sound quality, BBE
Weaknesses: A little complicated, the price jump from the next lower model is a bit high
Summary: This is a great stereo. I installed it in a 1999 Dodge Dakota and IMO it sounds much better than the Infinity stereo that came in the truck. It doesn't have an equalizer, but the BBE functionality seems to work just as well. From what I can tell, the only difference between this model ind the 9856 is that this one has the Biolite display. The Biolite display is a great feature, but I am not sure it is worth the price increase. It allows a lot more information to be displayed at once. This is especially useful when listening to an MP3 CD. The only real "complaint" I have is that it is a bit complicated to control. The English part of the manual is 35 pages!

Strengths: the unit speaks for itself...I have had various alpines for 20 years...this unit is fantastic for the average or slightly above average car audio enthusiast. the more advanced might not like it...
Weaknesses: For me only one
Summary: the install was standard...I have not fully gotten to enjoy the stereo yet due to I am constructing the new sub box in two weeks, the unit is great as I would think. I have used Alpine off and on for over 20 years and I feel every time I come back to them I am pleasantly surprised. Granted like all things the unit is not as strong as some of the cassette units I had in the early 90's but then again nothing is as tough as it was back in the days. The only item I wish they would have put in is the S/N ratio on the cd player of the 9861 which is 115dB...but I am happy with the 105.
