Strengths: Very inexpensive 6.1 receiver. Good sound quality.
Weaknesses: Digital inputs are not assignable, optical input is locked to the DVD mode and both coxial inputs are aux1 and aux2 respectively. No component inputs. Very basic remote included. No crossover for sub.
Summary: 2007-01-18 19:10:46 I purchased this receiver on sale from bestbuy.com for $127.49. For a 600 watt 6.1 receiver this price is a steal. Being able to Process DTS, Dobly Digital, Dolby ProLogic, and their variants this receiver can take almost any digital signal you throw at it. There's only one optical input and two coaxial digital inputs which may bring up an issue with some users. The digital inputs are not assignable. The optical runs on DVD mode while coax 1 and 2 are called AUX 1 and AUX 2. This poses no functional issue, but some people prefer to be able to assign digital inputs to whatever mode they are running.
There is no built in sub woofer crossover. For people who run component subs with external amplifiers may have an issue with this. The sub output does cutoff at some frequency, probably in the 100hz range but it is not adjustable. If you want to fine tune the crossover frequency you would need to run a separate crossover.
This receiver only has S-Video and Composite inputs, no component inputs. Again, this may pose an issue for some people who are looking for a receiver that has a built in component switch. For a sub $150 receiver I am more than happy to run an external component switch.
The remote that comes with the unit is pretty cheesey. While it has all the necessary buttons to operate the receiver from your seat it does not have a built in universal remote. The angle at which the remote is used also seems to be quite narrow so you must point the remote head on at the unit. Since Insignia is exclusive to Best Buy you're more than likely not going to find it in your universal remote book. A simple google search reveals that most Insignia users are having luck with LG and Sansui codes. Any learning remote works just fine with this receiver. I personally use a learning remote with this unit so I cannot confirm what universal codes work with this receiver.
To conclude, This is a great 6.1 receiver if you don't mind the simple drawbacks I listed.
