Strengths: HDTV tuner and DVD player in one; upconverts everything to 1080i, 720p, 480p, or 480i, your choice; DVD player plays just about everything, quality HDTV tuner, easy setup, and very simple to use
Weaknesses: Poor FF/rewind control on the remote, and no numeric readout of the HDTV antenna signal strength (only graphic bars).
Summary: 2004-12-04 19:04:47 I can't believe how expensive external HDTV tuner are. If I had known that, I would have bought my HDTV with tuner built-in instead of this "HD ready" crap. Let that be a lesson to you guys contemplating this as well. If you have to choose, get the tuner built-in!!!
I have read good review on this unit. Not only was the tuner good, its built-in DVD player has upconversion capability as well. Sweet. Once I tried it out, it did not disappoint me. There is a noticablely improvement over our old DVD player w/o the upconvert thingy.
HDTV tuner turns out to be very good. All I have to do is to attach the HDTV antenna and have it to auto search. It will search all available stations. The signals are stable, quality is good, and it even gives me a nice HDTV guide too.
So far, I am very satisfied. I am waiting to get my DVI cable so that the quality will be and should be even better. I will update this review upon install the DVI cable. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: Got my DVI cable today and sat it up. HD channels look good. Have not got a chance to review the difference between the 480i/480p/720p/1080i upconvert picture quality yet. Oh, the remote is horrible at controlling fast forward/rewind function, as one button is designed as both FF and skip. So if you are not careful, you will skip to the next/prior chapter. Very frustrating. Heck, with this monster size remote, I think they should shrunk some buttons, thus could fit more to it.
