Strengths: Form Factor, price, performance, software bundled, security
Weaknesses: Form factor, price, firewire flakiness, shared video memory, support for only one monitor
Summary: Overall, I must say I do like this Mac Mini. It's my first desktop Mac purchase since my Blue & White G3/300 PowerMac from like a bazillion years ago! When I bought my Quadra 800, and Apple came out with the 840av like two weeks later, I vowed to hold off buying anything until I knew I could live with it for a good long time. Well, I had been waiting for my self-imposed embargo of no Desktop Macs less than TEN TIMES the speed of my G3/300. (That would mean 3gHz and no I don't count dual or quad anythings!) But, I couldn't wait. My work issued me a G5/1.67 and I got spoiled. I figured this would be a good cheap stopgap to tide me over until the G6/3gHz or whatever comes out.
Now I usually don't go for the first rev. of any hardware, but I really couldn't see getting a lesser model. I wanted the DVD Super-Drive and the Intel Duo Core. So, that left the top 'o da line Mac Mini as my only option. Ordered from Amazon, no sales tax and free shipping is some relief over what Apple charges, and got it within a few days.
First impression? Dang! It's teeny! I would say it's no bigger than to-go box from a salad joint. It is tiny. But the pictures make it look all clean and everything. Once you connect all the USB, monitor, ethernet and power cables, it looks like a huge router or something. A snazzy looking router, but a router nonetheless!
Performance wise, it is comparable to the G5/1.6gHz. Natch. But, I haven't done any heavy duty apps other than Firefox, iTunes, iChat and eMail. So, take that with a grain of salt.
As I go farther with it, I'll update. Until then, this is a recommend!
