Strengths: Crytal clear video display, fast access times.
Weaknesses: Need remote for DVD menu navigation, too few buttons, no direct buttons for presets or EQ settings, main round buttons are easily scratched, not the best sound quality.
Summary: I bought this headunit because I have had 2 previous JVC headunits for my car, so my CD changer works with it. I'm not using the internal amplifier since all my speakers are powered by JL amplifiers. Strenghts: The Video screen on this thing is stunningly clear. 3.5" sounds small but the video output is crisp and it's great to watch movies while waiting around. It also helps that the angle of the face and be adjusted. The sound quality is not bad, it's slightly better than the headunit it replaces (JVC KD-SH9700), but the unit doesn't give you full control of the sound. The Crossovers have fixed slopes and the subs and the mains must have the same freq crossover. The 7 band EQ is effective but I prefer using a parametric EQ for better control of my bass. Also, I really miss my rotary encoder. All the headunits I've had had a rotary knob to control the volume and navigating through the menu, and I miss it. I have to keep tapping the volume buttons to raise or lower the volume. I also don't understand why most of the High end headunits are omitting preset buttons. You have to go into multiple levels of the menu to access presets and EQ settings. This unit has a lot of versatility though. I have a headrest monitor and a CD/MP3 changer connected to it, and I have a 3.5mm jack connected to the A/V input so I can connect my Ipod or laptop to it. You could also hook up a Back-up camera to the AV input and there's even a wire to connect to the reverse lights so the display will automatically switch to the back-up camera when the reverse lights are on. It's also easy to defeat the video lockout so you can have DVD movies playing with while driving, for your passengers of course. I don't have a center channel speaker, but the surroung sound processing is nowhere near as good as a home theater system. An SD card reader would have been excellent since there would be no need to keep burning CDs. Also, when playing music CDs or MP3 CDs, the display is boring. Theres all this dead space and it just displays the Cd text or ID3 info in the middle, with the time in the lower right corner and the EQ setting on the upper right corner. It would have been nice to be able to edit the background to display pictures and maybe even have a spectrum analyser to make use of the large screen. All-in-all, this is an excellent headunit that can do a lot of things and do it well. The sound quality is great, not the best, but certainly not crappy. There is not much control for tweaking the sound quality but I can do that through my external amps so it's no big deal. I got it for $416 on Overstock.com so I think I got my money's worth. Everyone who has been in my car is impressed with it.
