Great in bright lit environments, but horrible otherwise without flash
Strengths: - Small and compact
- Nice design
- Very low noise on lowest ISO
- Well exposed images and nice colors (if lighting is good)
- Less prone to breaking due to internal lens
- Alot of scene modes
Weaknesses: - Absolutely horrible in low light (which means anything less then bright sun light) without flash,
- No viewfinder
- Not many manual controls
Summary: Basically, this is who this camera is for:
If you want to take quick pictures in places such as partys and get-togethors, or just need a camera for very general usage, this camera is for you considering you are NOT very picky with the flash and do not mind using the flash for pictures in anything less then bright sun light.
This camera, in most cases, NEEDS the flash to take sharp pictures that are not blurry. If you want to take indoor pics without the flash, you are out of luck unless you use a tripod (and even that doesn't completely eliminate the problem).
The fact is that this camera does not have image stabilization, something that I think is very important in a digital camera.
Personally, I am fairly picky with my photos and do not like to use the flash unless I ABSOLUTELY have to, and this means that I have tried other modes and methods and only use the flash as a last resort.
I returned this and bought the Canon S2, which is a much better camera (although in a different category, as that is a fairly large camera in comparison to the Nikon S5 which is an ultracompact). It has image stabilization and has many more manual functions.
Surprisingly, however, the Nikon has less noise and produces slightly better images in bright light, but the lack of image stabilization really killed that camera otherwise. The fact that it doesnt have a viewfinder really hurts it too, as holding a camera close to the body and using the viewfinder can help elimate camera shake somewhat.
With all of that said, this camera is perfect for people who want a camera they can slip into their pockets. Its a very good "party camera" for taking snapshots at social events (with the flash, ofcourse) and also works well in bright sun light.
However, it most definitly did not suite my needs and hence the low rating.

Great General Camera that does have its flaws - NIKON S5
Strengths: Great shape and feel for small hands like mine. Easy interface to use (I'm used to NIKON Coolpix). Easy to use in general.
Weaknesses: When using flash, sometimes spotting does occur in pictures. No vibration reduction. Does not support USB 2.0.
Summary: This generally is a nice camera with not really any great features. The body of the camera is curved and fits my small hands/fingers perfectly. Someone with big hands may not like it. The 2.5 inch screen is a perfect size and elminates the need for a viewfinder unless you are in bright/sunny weather.
The only real big problem is that there sometimes is some spotting in your images due to the flash of the camera. If you do not have patience with photo editting or having to retake pictures, do not buy this camera. If you are going to transfer photos, I recommend taking the SD card out and transfer photos with that. The USB 1.0 interface is slow when using the camera base that comes along with it.
Lastly, an optional waterproof jacket (FJ-CP-1) is available for the camera and can be used in the rain and within 10 feet of water. I got it and it works perfectly with the camera!

Strengths: Small, easy to use, produces high quality pictures.
Weaknesses: No vibration control but it doesn't appear to hurt the quality of prints.
Summary: I bought this camera for my daughter to take to college. The small size is a big plus. She loves it. She has been sending a lot of great shots home, including some movies. a few days before I embarked on a cruise. She didn't want a larger camera. She has told us that many of her friends have talked about getting the smae camera. Best of all we found it at Sam's Club for $ 149.

Strengths: compact size, beautiful design, quality images, and easy use
Weaknesses: It would be better if it has vibrating reduction.
Summary: I am quite satisfied on this camera. I love its design and its quality images the most. Also, it has functions easy to use and 20 languages, not only English, French, but also Thai, Indonesia, which make more convenient to me to know how to use it. However, photos are not good enough in low light. You might have to take a photo with a flash, but I think the pictures will be not natural as same as the realistic moment.

Strengths: Wonderfully compact. Easy to use. Sharp photos with and without a flash.
Weaknesses: Granted it doesn't have the Vibration Reduction of many other compact cameras.
Summary: I bought this camera a few days before I embarked on a cruise. I didn't want to lug a full size camera in a camera bag. Learning to use it was a relatively simple matter. A beginner can start out using the S5 as a point and shoot. Then learn to add features as time and motivation permits. Photos have been sharp. A 5" tripod is a great accessory since it permits much slower shutter speeds. Also, the tripod acts as a handy grip on the camera keeping your fingers away from the lens. A cradle (included) permits downloading images without removing the memory chip while at the same time the battery recharges. Very convenient. All in all a very satisfying experience.

Very nice package with a major flaw
Strengths: Very well designed physically. Good menu. Small. Excellent lens in a small package.
Weaknesses: Flaw in flash design resulted in poor indoor picture and ghost bubble
Summary: This is my 6th digital camera so I have come a long way - from Sony to Nikon to Sony to HP to Casio and back to Nikon. I always have faith in Nikon's optical, especially when the camera is not at the very bottom of the food chain. This is a good package in a tiny body. Everything works to my expectation including speed, picture quality, with the BIG exception of pictures taken with the microscopic flash. Not only Nikon made the flash powerless, it resulted in some pictures appearing with a ghostly bubble! I would try to use the camera without flash anyway - small cameras never take good flash pictures - you need an SLR with the big flash.

A choice for pocket DC
Strengths: Small, compact and user friendly, multi-language supporting
Weaknesses: Low ISO sensitivity
Summary: Small, compact and user friendly, multi-language supporting. The LCD viewer has great definition and clarity, and so are the pictures it takes. It is fun when using the rotating navigation button to select the menu. The ISO sensitivity is to low and even the highest ISO is merely 400 (200 for auto mode) and there is no VR (vibration reduce) system, so do not expect it to take pitctures with decent quality at night.

Strengths: light, portable, very nice lcd
Weaknesses: not seen yet
Summary: It is such a nice camera, which is portable, and has very nice lcd screen. It looks so cool and takes high quality photos. Really like it. I ranked the photo took by this printer much better than Samsung S630 ones.

Strengths: support multiple languages, cool apperance
Weaknesses: no
Summary: 2008-01-09 09:10:00 Nikon's camera matches it's reputations. It is very well manufactured and it is so portable, for example, the camera feels solid and durable and all controls have the feeling of real high quality, as we have expected from Nikon cameras; the back side of the camera is covered by 2.5" LCD screen with a scratch resistant acrylic covering, which is really cool. I like this product although the resolution is not so high at nowadays. It is thin so it is so easy to take it. The quality of the photos present the quality of the Nikon. I tried several other brands. Nikon ones are really outstanding. Recommanded for general purpose photos.
