Strengths: Front panel USB input, detachable face, 3 preamp outputs (including an adjustable subwoofer), crystal clear display, multiple color schemes (even adjustable for specific inputs), remote.
Weaknesses: None
Summary: 2008-02-02 14:00:25 I bought this JVC-KDG820 CD Receiver after looking at Alpine, Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony, and Eclipse head units. This was the only one that I could find that had the flexibility I need when I listen to music. I don't have an iPod, so I didn't test those features. I also didn't test the SIRIUS satellite radio features. I needed USB input and the capacity to read a large flash drive. Some reviews state that this supports flash drives up to 1GB. I called JVC and they said they tested up to 4GB models, but not all brands, so they couldn't 'officially' state it supported any drive larger than that. I bought a 4GB Corsair Flash Voyager and loaded it with mp3s, and the JVC KD-G820 recognized it. (I've since purchased a Corsair Flash Voyager 8GB flash drive, and it was recognized! It has fast read times, so cheaper flash drives may not work.) Another important feature was last song recall, which this has. Turn your car off in the middle of a song (which is 99.9% of the time) and it's right there when you start the car again. If you do remove the face when you leave the car, don't remove the flash drive until after the face. When you get back in the car, put the flash drive in before attaching the face. Do this, and last song return still works.

I tried the Pioneer Premier DEH-P690UB, and I did not like it. The display was like something from the future from an 80's movie, the text was very pixelated, unlike the smooth text of the JVC KD-G820. The Pioneer also lacked the random play options of the JVC. If you want music variety with good random play options, I highly recommend it. (From what I see, the JVC KD-G830 seems to be the same head unit with a few upgrades, but I haven't tested it.)
