Strengths: Mows 1.5 acres in about an hour. Deck is easy to do maintenance on (grease pulleys and sharpen blades).
Weaknesses: Briggs engine is rough and loud compared to neighbor's Kohler
Summary: Have about 70 hours on it now. Love the machine! I don't understand all the problems others have posted. Unless the people with good machines just don't bother reviewing. Which is likely the case, they're probably out mowing with this awesome machine. I wouldn't pay 6000 for one (only a crazy person would), but the 2900 I paid was definitely well spent.

1 Star ReviewShort lived........
Strengths: Manuverability, nice motor, smooth cut
Weaknesses: Quality of construction, durability, ease of servicing
Summary: 2006-07-10 10:10:51 I owned this machine a total of 20 minutes before it totally broke down. That was the last of three problems encountered in the first 20 minutes of use.

Problem #1

The deck would not hold a cutting height position. After I set the deck height, it would constantly drop to the lowest position as soon as the machine started to move. This happened every time (tried to set the height 6 times).

Problem #2

The left hydro transmission turned at a substantially higher speed than the right one. In order to go in a straight line I had to feather the left control arm almost all the way back to the neutral position to go straight.

Problem #3

At the 20th minute the drive belt for the hydro transmissions snapped as I was travelling straight stopping the machine in its tracks. It was difficult to push the machine even with the hydros in neutral.

To its credit, the machine did more work than a conventional tractor for the time it operated. But 20 minutes is less time than expected for a $3000 machine.

I tried to replace the drive belt because the machine was so difficult to push and i cut up my hands in the maze of sharp protruding sheet metal screws and punched steel guards. Plus there was no room to reach under to get at the belt without dropping most of the drivetrain.

Summary

With some refinements toward serviceability and some (any) quality control, this could be a nice machine instead of the lower quality machine that it is. I returned it for a full refund.

1 Star ReviewCrap Cadet
Strengths: Will mow well if you can keep it running.
Weaknesses: Electrical system
Summary: The mower has 54 hours on it and is used very carefully.

I have experienced 3 electrical problems with it.

The Dealer is incompetent and the Cub Cadet Web site contact us refers all warranty work to the Dealer.

I paid $5200 for this lousy engineered mower.

Try another brand.

1 Star ReviewCub Cadet/MTD
Strengths: Cuts OK when it runs.
Weaknesses: Cheaply made, hard to get serviced.
Summary: 30 Hours on it and it will not run. I probably would not have purchased if I had known it was made by MTD. I have a 3500.00 piece of equipment that I cannot use or even get serviced. Manufacturer warranty and dealer/seller extended warranty($$$) are useless.

1 Star ReviewBreaks down all the time - poorly constructed - poor customer support
Strengths: Cuts nice when working which is not very often.
Weaknesses: Poorly constructed. Poorly assembled. Poor support. No customer support. Find a auth service provider before buying or you'll be stuck with Cub Crap.
Summary: I've had my rzt 50 for two years. Since I've had it - it has had 4 different problems that have taken it out of commission for weeks during the peak summer growing season - what a disaster. It started the first week I owned it and if I had been smart, I would have taken it back then. I bought it at Lowes and they couldn't get anyone local (Cub Cadet Authorized)to service it. So, I had to fix my brand new machine myself after getting Lowes to acquire the parts for me. What good is a warranty if theres no body to fix it? Take notice that Lowes no longer sells these units.

Cub Cadet is a disaster and provides no customer support. If they tell you they have people - call their people and ask how long they have worked with Cub Crap (and know based upon my experience that it is highly unlikely they will be there next year).

Before you even consider purchasing, 3) things to know: 1.) find 3 auth service providers or you'll be stuck with a Cub Crap - an expensive machine that causes frustration and headaches instead of getting the job done. 2.) You'll need a backup machine to cut the lawn when it breaks down. 3.) Their customer service people will be difficult and pretend that this never happens while they spend days trying to find someone to do repairs...be patient it could take awhile and they will act like your are asking for an awful lot.

Strengths: Very strong engine, cuts close enough to almost eliminate weed whacking, cuts quickly, 4 years and no problems.
Weaknesses: A bit hard to change the blades and oil.
Summary: There are a lot of negative comments on this mower and I think it may be the MTD biasis a lot of folks have. I bought mine in 2005 and have used it to mow my 2 acre lot for the last 4 summers and it hasn't missed a lick. I am getting close to 100 hours with no malfunctions, no cutting issues, no complaints. I even put a hitch on the back to pull around a 1000lbs rate 4X6 garden trailer and it tows as well if not better than the Craftsman 22 HP lawn tractor I had before. There are not too many weekends it hasn't been used and it has not failed me. I do regular maintenance on it, and maybe the other folks don't.

1 Star ReviewHigh priced junk
Strengths: mows nice when it runs
Weaknesses: timing belt on deck, deck doesnt move to countour of ground, poor wiring from factory,no adequate dealerships close by.
Summary: I have the i1042 zero turn tractor...so im chiming in on this one anyways.I had problems from the first mow.The rubber foot pedals fell off.The blades came loose on the second mow and hit together and ruined them. The wiring burned up because they put it too close to the muffler.Thats with only 12 hours mow time on it.Mine is going back to Home depot and I'll never buy another piece of equipment from them again...poor customer service.

3200 dollar pice of junk...spent more time trying to keep it runnin than mowin.
