Strengths: - Lightweight Camera with all the fancy wistles & bells - Nice docking station so you can watch your videos via a TV/monitor Weaknesses: N O N E Summary: What a great MiniCam! Too bad that Sony told me they were phasing this one out; but I was still able to find a great deal via the Internet. Camcorder has the famous Carl Ziess lens, a 2.7" wide LCD monitor, and up to 7 hours of battery life. I went ahead and ordered a separate AC (wall plug) charger so I wouldn't have to keep the MiniCam plugged in all the time (Shentech has them for around $14) and a spare battery to keep charged all the time. While I was secretly holding out for a high-res video camera, the prices right now are just too high for us. This is a good alternative to hold me over for a few years. It does shoot widescreen which calculates a higher resolution then 4:3. It can also shoot still images and store them to a Memory Stick Duo. But, the images are pretty small, so I really don't understand the point of the feature even being included. It saves the video on MiniDV tapes. I think it can store video to the memory card as well, but I haven't got that far in the manual yet. The sound can be recorded in CD (16 bit) quality, but interestingly, this is not the default, so you'll have to change it if you want that. And while it is capable of connecting to your PC via USB and firewire, it only comes with a USB cable, so you'll have to get your own firewire. In conclusion, if you're not quite ready to take the high-res video camera plunge, this is a pretty good deal right now. 100% of People (1/1) found this review helpful. Weaknesses: Optical zoom is only 12X; Not so good low light performance; Touch screen is easy to get dirty because of fingerprints; No small size memory duo card provided. Summary: I have owned several camcorders over the years and I'm always pleased with the quality of Sony. Sharpness, color saturation and ease of use are excellent. But compared with lower model, HC36 comes with 20x optical zoom. (BTW, Sony's higher model HC96 only comes with 10x optical zoom but with much higher resolution.) I am using memory stick pro duo card for recording instead of Mini-DV Cassettes, but found that it is not easy to pull the small card out of the slot. If you own a HDTV set, this is the camcorder for you because of its wide screen LCD. One of my biggest favorites is touch screen menu system, but it is easy to get dirty because of your fingerprints :-) Overall, it is a great cam! 97% of People (38/39) found this review helpful.
