Strengths: Puts out 50x4 Has everything the 9857 has but weaker pixels.
Weaknesses: The graphics could be nicer.
Summary: Overall, this headunit was definitely worth its money. For about a hundred more you could get the one with better pixel quality, but who cares when the sound quality improvement will be the same. Alpine all the way.

Strengths: sound quality, design, CD playback. Display is nice at night or in low-light conditions.
Weaknesses: Display can be mirror-like depending on ambient lighting conditions. Some functions require too many button-pressing to access.
Summary: Got this after returning the 9846 for the RCA outs to plug into my factory amplifier.

Sound 5/5: RCA output to factory amp produces cleaner sound than OEM unit. The Bass engine is a nice feature to customize bass boost. 5/5 for what I need.

Display 3/5: Highly reflective display surface due to the dark background. Light-colored interior or high HU mounting position causes ambient light/objects to be mirrored on the display surface...making the white display characters hard to read. Direct sunlight actually doesn't do this for some reason. Wondering if I can buy any polarized tint strips or something? Dimmer function dims both button and display, looks very nice at night. # of characters displayed is limited, there's enough space for a 2-line display.

Controls (4/5): 9846 actually easier to control. Because of the flip-down, 9856 loses functionality of volume knob as a push button. Lots of adjustments require pressing the tiny "mode" button. Deeper menus not as easy to navigate as I'd like, Alpine should use one of the many idle buttons as an "escape" button so it's faster to jump back out of function menus.

Radio 4/5: Reception seems to be more prone to static than OEM unit. But my car has embedded antenna that has 2 antenna plugs into the OEM unit. So I don't know if the fact the Alpine only used the main antenna plug affected its perfomance. It would be nice if they added RDS though...

CD/MP3 5/5: Flawless so far. Easy to navigate through MP3 folders. Very fast loading time between songs, random play works very well. No skipping with road bumps.

2 Star Reviewgood delivery, but some fundamental challenges
Strengths: Excellent interactivity w/ iPod
Weaknesses: can't read the labels, complicated
Summary: I purchased this unit from Crutchfield in order to get the antenna adapter, plate adapter, and wiring harness for free.

I have been pleased w/ the level and quality of the sound. My biggest frustration is the white letters on lighted blue background buttons. Can you see white letters on light blue background easily? Only by leaning directly in front of the unit and peering for a moment can I read the labels. The labels on black buttons are just as bad due to their tiny size. If looking again, I would consider more specifically how easy the buttons are to read, especially in daylight.

The iPod interactivity is why I bought the unit. The iPod connection cord (sold separately) allows the unit to be powered and controlled by the receiver. Just plug the iPod in to the cord and you don't have to touch the iPod again. Very handy.

The bass booster controls appear to have increased the level of bass I hear, but I'm not sure if it does more than just turning up the bass more. The instructions are written for those that already understand the complexities of sound reproduction and do little to pass on an understanding of why this extended functionality is valuable.

The range of functionality and setup is complicated. I have the owner's manual sitting next to me so I can review relevant sections as needed. When was the last time you had to do that w/ a car stereo?

What does the display demo do? How do you turn it on? Do you twist the volume knob, hit mode, the folder button? What are those up and down buttons for?

Overall, a good unit at a good price. I can only hope I memorize all the button locations and functions w/in a reasonable amount of time.

Strengths: Good design and feel. Gives out great sound and allows for many custom settings. Works great with IPod.
Weaknesses: At times confusing and hard to configure. IPod controls are kinda iffy but work well.
Summary: Great stereo. I upgraded from my stock to this alpine and it works great. I recommend for everyone thinking about buying this new model. Great if later thinking about new speakers, sub, ect. Great price for the quality and style of this unit. A+

Strengths: Ease of use didn't need owners manual. Ipod accessible. Fits in my car.
Weaknesses: NA
Summary: Love the Ipod feature but had to purchase the $30 box for my car so it would attach to the ipod. The sound and power is perfect for my taste. An upgrade from the factory installed player I had. Nice that the face detaches and has a case to carry. I would buy again if I had the choice again.
